Briton ‘may never walk again’ after falling from third-floor balcony during stag do in Portugal – with family fearing insurance may not cover vital surgery

A British man’s family fears he may never walk again after he fell from a third-floor balcony during a stag do in Portugal.

Jakob Davies, 25, fell from a height in Albufeira and suffered severe injuries, including a broken back.

Mr Davies, from North Yorkshire, had stayed back at his hotel on June 5 to watch a football match while his friends went on a night out.

He was later found unconscious on the floor of the hotel’s car park and was rushed to hospital where doctors discovered that he had suffered a head injury, broken feet and ankles and two fractures in his lower spine.

His mother Claire Gerrard says his travel insurance still has not confirmed if they will pay for the surgery he needs and she fears they will not because he had been drinking at the time of the accident.

Insurance companies often include clauses that state they may refuse a claim if they believe the incident is a result of being under the influence or in connection with alcohol and drugs.

Mr Davies’s friends and mother have set up a GoFundMe to help pay the bills and bring him home.

Ms Gerrard, who lives in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, said: ‘It’s awful, it’s a phone call you get when you’re not expecting it, it’s a horrible feeling and obviously it’s a constant worry.’

Mr Davies is currently on his own in hospital in Faro while he awaits a response from his insurer.

The hospital has told him if he doesn’t have an operation, he may never be able to walk again.

Ms Gerrard, who is a care business owner, said: ‘He’s totally on his own. I need to know what’s going to happen to him.

‘He was told that if you don’t have this operation immediately, then you won’t walk again.

‘He does have travel insurance, but because of the alcohol that he’s drunk, it’s not looking like they will pay.’
