Experts have revealed which foods need to be kept in the fridge – and it’s bad news if you refrigerate apples or keep tomato sauce in the pantry.

Consumer experts at CHOICE shared their definitive guide of what to keep in the fridge vs. the pantry and named basil, chocolate and capsicums as items best stored in the cupboard. 

Cheese, butter, nut and seed oil and maple syrup, on the other hand, should always be stored in the fridge.

Experts have revealed which foods need to be kept in the fridge – and it’s bad news if you refrigerate apples or keep tomato sauce in the pantry 

Bananas can go in the fridge – especially if you want to stop them from getting too ripe. Apples should never go in the fridge as they release a gas which can make other food go off

‘Genuine 100 per cent maple syrup (not maple-flavoured syrup, which is mostly sugar) can actually develop mould when kept at room temperature,’ the team advised.

Non-dairy milk is dependent on whether it has been opened.  

‘Before opening, these generally don’t need to be refrigerated. After you’ve opened the carton, however, you should store it in the fridge and use it up within a week,’ the experts said.

Tomatoes should also be kept out of the fridge – ideally at 12 C – as chilling them ‘limits their ability to generate substances that contribute to aroma and taste’.

They also said it is important to let food cool down before popping it in the fridge because otherwise it can effect the internal temperature too much.

Coffee beans should also never be put in the fridge.

Some people like to freeze their coffee, but the US National Coffee Association says many experts recommend against this.

Keeping chocolate in the fridge ruins it, the experts said

If you do freeze your coffee, make sure you use a truly airtight container and do so in small portions – once you’ve taken your beans out of the freezer, it’s best not to put them back in again. 

Bread should only be kept in the fridge if you live in a humid climate while eggs will last longer when cold.
