Clifftop house with private access to Torquay beach goes on the market for the first time for £1.69m

A century-old clifftop house with private access to Torquay beach has gone on the market for the first time ever at £1.69million.

Built in 1923, the aptly-named Cliff House is in a prime position on Devon’s picturesque southern coast, with panoramic sea views and steps from the back garden leading down the cliff’s face to the water below.

The four-bedroom home – which comes complete with a World War Two Anderson bomb shelter – is in one of the finest waterfront locations in Britain and boasts jaw-dropping views across Torbay.

Thanks to the area’s microclimate the landscaped garden is inspired by the Mediterranean.

The first owner was a Victorian entrepreneur and brick manufacturer and no expense was spared in the building materials.

The Victorian home still has lots of original features, including ornate fireplaces, but is now in need of some updating. (Pictured: Hallway leading to a staircase)

Outside, the home (circled near cliff edge) has almost an acre of land with a greenhouse, summerhouse, a World War Two Anderson shelter and a former gun emplacement at the top of the garden which is now a seating area with panoramic views of the bay

The home also boasts an ornamental gatehouse with private steps down to the beach and secluded rock platforms below. (Pictured: View from beach below)

It still has lots of original features, including ornate fireplaces, but is now in need of some updating.

On the ground floor is a large hallway, kitchen/breakfast room, drawing room, dining room, two spare rooms and a veranda and terrace.

On the first floor there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a wrap around balcony with panoramic views.

There is also a basement with an integral garage, log store and two rooms which could be used as a media room, games room or gym.

Sarah-Jane Bingham-Chick, from estate agents Savills, said: ‘The views from Cliff House are spectacular.

‘There aren’t many properties like this available. The view is the real wow factor, and the property is wonderfully dated.

‘It has all the character that you would imagine of Torquay in Victorian times. The house does need modernising and updating but it has such a wonderful charm about it.

‘The owner says it is the only property in Torquay where you can actually go for a swim from the property.

‘There’s a gate at the bottom of the garden with steps down the cliff, which isn’t too steep, and you can just clamber onto the rocks and into the sea.. It’s just beautiful.

‘Torquay has a bit of a microclimate, we’ve seen our first daffodils already and blossom on the tree – I think we are a few weeks ahead of the rest of the country and that has always been the case down here.

‘The owner’s grandparents built it and he was born there, it’s a three generation property.’
