A couple have used lockdown to build their very own Ibiza nightclub – in their back garden.

Inspired by famed club night Glitterbox on the Spanish party island, the glam white bar, which cost just under £2,000, is kitted out with booze and cocktail equipment.

Laura Harmes, 42, and partner Mike Braid, 50, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, came up with the idea before Christmas – but it was lockdown which gave them the opportunity to finish it.

They finally got to enjoy the bar when the restrictions were eased in Scotland last month – which coincided with Mike’s 50th birthday celebrations.

And it even came to the attention of the Ibiza club, which sent them a message of appreciation.

Father-of-two Mike said: ‘It was just a wee idea we had back in October. I started just before Christmas but once the weather turned we kind of left it, and when lockdown came we battered on with it and finished it a few weeks ago.

‘It was Laura’s idea to call it Glitterbox. We have been to this club in Ibiza many times over the years. We all have a great love for Ibiza.

‘It’s got a double fridge at the end of the bar, with beers, cocktails, spirits, and a draught beer machine. It’s turned out really well.

‘It went viral and has just gone crazy. We’ve had comments from DJs saying, “Can we come and perform in your garden?”

‘Glitterbox emailed as well saying it was fab – they’re really taken with it.’

Laura, who works as a nurse, has been working throughout the pandemic.

Their sons, Liam, 11, and Kieran, 18, are thrilled with the bar – and can’t wait to show their pals when it’s allowed.

The couple had been planning a trip to America around this time but were happy instead to be able to see their family in the back garden of their home.

Glitterbox proved so popular that visitors had to book time slots, with social distancing.

Mike, who runs a sign business, said: ‘We had some people round but we had to book them in slots – social distancing of course.

‘We were supposed to be going to Vegas and New York around this time but it was good we got to see our parents.’

He added: ‘The kids love it. Liam loves playing the barman to his mum and I. Kieran loves it too.

‘He can’t wait to be able to DJ at it for his friends and family when we are eventually allowed to.’
