When visiting a city, decent public transport and easy walking routes make a big difference to the overall experience.
Fortunately you don’t need to worry about navigating roads heaving with vehicles in Athens, as it has been named the top city for a car-free break.
Hospitality company Accor compiled data on cities across the continent.
They analysed factors including how much of the centre is dominated by pedestrians, the diversity and affordability of public transport, and how close the attractions are.
The Greek capital scored the highest with 99.75 out of 100 overall for being easily explored without a car.
It impressed with its pedestrian belt that circles around the Acropolis.
Athens’ neighbourhoods like Plaka, Monastiraki and Psyrri are all easily reachable from one another by foot.
Meanwhile, the coast is easily reachable by a tram and the airport can be accessed by the metro.

It boasts four major rail hubs and the city scored an impressive 97 per cent for accessibility and comfort.
Munich, in Germany, followed closely behind in second place with a score of 97.7.
Those jetting in can easily reach the historic city centre by train from the airport and visitors are able to enjoy exploring by foot.
There are plenty of trams running for holidaymakers hoping to venture between sights and handy U-Bahn stairwells are in helpful locations too.
Lisbon placed third with a score of 91.28 and boasts a whopping 100 per cent for transport variety.
The Portuguese capital has a range of public transport options – from the metro to ferries that take visitors along the Tagus.
Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, ranked fourth with 88.16 points.
A 24-hour transport pass costs around €2 and the city scored 90 per cent for accessibility and comfort.

The city has 2,000 years of history and visitors can soak up various sights by foot including the Borisova Gradina Park, St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral and street markets.
Hamburg ranked fifth and scored 87.12 out of 100 due to its extensive pedestrian zones and range of transport options.
Vienna and Porto closely followed, also scoring 87.12, as did Madrid.
Meanwhile, Zurich ranked ninth with 81.8 out of 100 and Lyon placed tenth scoring 79.38.
