Europe’s green capital for 2027 revealed

Europe’s green capital for 2027 has been revealed – and you might never have heard of it.

Heilbronn, a city in southwest Germany, has been given the title.

It was announced on October 2 at the European Green Capital Awards ceremony in Vilnius.

The event aimed to bring together cities from across the continent to celebrate leadership in sustainability.

As the 2025 title holder, Vilnius marked its year of progress and officially announced Heilbronn as the European Green Capital 2027.

Plus, the European Green Leaf Awards – for smaller cities – will go to Assen in the Netherlands and Siena in Italy.

Heilbronn was handed the crown based on top scores that the city received in air quality, water, noise, climate change adaptation and the circular economy.

Heilbronn has shown its role in eco development through its ‘Landscape Plan 2030’ and the city’s ‘Mobility Concept’.

Citizen engagement is central, with participatory platforms, awareness campaigns, and protection for quiet areas, the European Commission reported.

The jury also recognised the city’s ambitious targets for 2035, as well as the regional collaborations that Heilbronn has built to further improve air quality and noise reduction.

Commissioner for environment, water resilience and a competitive circular economy Jessika Roswall said: ‘The European Green Capital and European Green Leaf awards, each year, recognise cities that strive to be at the forefront of urban and environmental sustainability.

‘Cities that – simply put – lead by example.

‘I am delighted to congratulate Heilbronn, Assen and Siena for having been awarded these titles for 2027.

‘This is both a recognition and responsibility – you are our new ambassadors of the green transition.’

In 2026, the European Green Capital title will pass from Vilnius to Guimarães, Portugal.

The Portuguese city will continue green initiatives and inspire communities to embrace sustainable change.

After a close contest, Heilbronn emerged as the winner, earning the 2027 title

After Vilnius and Guimarães, Heilbronn is next in line.

For 2027, the competition was fierce.

It came down to Klagenfurt (Austria), Heilbronn (Germany), Siena (Italy) and Debrecen (Hungary).

After a close contest, Heilbronn emerged as the winner, earning the European Green Capital 2027 title.
