It’s a brew-tiful fusion of geography and gastronomy.
This fascinating world map reveals every country’s favourite way to consume coffee – and cappuccino is No.1 overall.
The map was drawn up by Coffeeness, a blog dedicated to ‘all things coffee’, which examined the Google search volume for 21 coffee types across countries worldwide over the past 12 months. This includes searches made both in English and in the native language of each respective country.
Cappuccino – one espresso shot mixed with steamed milk and foam – tops the ranking in 24 countries, including Belgium, France, Netherlands, Spain, India, Saudi Arabia and Kenya.
‘People love cappuccino because it offers a balanced amount of each component in every sip,’ Coffeeness says.

Espresso is the second most popular coffee drink on the planet. The strong, concentrated brew is preferred in 14 countries worldwide including Germany, Greece, Iceland, Pakistan, Egypt and the U.S.
In third place, it’s black coffee, made using nothing more than coffee grounds and water. It’s the preferred choice in 12 countries including Bulgaria, Portugal, Israel, UAE, South Africa and Colombia.
The Americano, made by mixing an espresso shot with hot water, ranks fourth, topping the list in 10 countries including Italy, South Korea and Argentina.
Rounding off the top five is the Mocha in fifth. The milk-based espresso drink, which is flavoured with chocolate powder or syrup and commonly topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, is the number one brew in six countries including Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand.
Other popular coffee drinks are latte, Irish coffee, flat white, macchiato and iced coffee – which all tie for the sixth spot.

Mocha is the fifth most popular coffee type, favoured in six countries including New Zealand. Macchiato, in joint sixth, is the top choice in four countries including the UK and Australia
Latte, made with one or two espresso shots mixed with steamed milk and a thick layer of frothed milk, is most popular in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brazil.
Irish coffee is favoured in Ireland and, perhaps more surprisingly, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
South America has a mixture of coffee tastes
‘It’s a curious coffee variation because it is spiked with whiskey, sweetened with some sugar and has a whipped cream layer added to the top,’ says Coffeeness.
Flat white, made by mixing two espresso shots with steamed milk and no froth, is the go-to coffee in Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland and Denmark.
While macchiato, served in an espresso cup with a coffee-to-milk ratio of one to two, is the No.1 in the UK, Albania, Honduras and Australia.
‘It’s great for people who find a cappuccino too weak but an espresso too bitter,’ according to Coffeeness.
Iced coffee – ‘simply your favorite coffee drink served on ice and [sometimes] mixed with sweeteners and milk’ – is the preferred drink in Nicaragua, Chile, Norway and the Philippines.
Coffeeness notes that it’s ‘different from cold brew coffee in that cold brew coffee has a bolder taste and takes longer to make’.
The bottom of the ranking included Cortado (No.1 in Bahrain, equal parts espresso and steamed milk); frappuccino (top in Peru, made with coffee, ice and syrups) and Turkish coffee (top in Turkey, brewed in a copper pot called a cezve using ground coffee and sweetened to taste).
A separate map for the U.S reveals the most popular coffee in every state.
Reigning supreme, espresso takes the top spot in 28 states from Alaska, Washington and Oregon in the west to Maine, New York and South Carolina in the east. It’s also joint first in California, along with cappuccino.

In second place is the latte, favoured in 14 states including Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky.
Taking the bronze, it’s cappuccino, which is the preferred coffee drink in 11 states including Texas, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Florida.
Louisiana is the only state that prefers cafe au lait – a French coffee drink made with equal parts black coffee and steamed milk with no froth.
Caffeine-lovers in Hawaii and Connecticut, meanwhile, are big fans of affogato, which usually comes as a scoop of milk-flavoured or vanilla gelato topped with a shot of hot espresso.
