If you’ve got a fear of clowns, then this certainly isn’t the hotel for you.
A YouTube video is offering a glimpse of what it’s like to stay at the Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada, which prides itself on being ‘America’s scariest motel.’
Content creator Josh took his father to the hotel for a night’s stay, and explained to viewers that the moment you step into the place, it has an unsettling atmosphere with more than 3,000 clowns of all shapes and sizes on display.
Making things odder, the motel looks out over a cemetery where 300 people have been buried beneath leaning crosses and tin signs. Several of those interned there died of a mysterious plague in 1902, and 14 of them were miners who died in a fire in 1911.

While strolling around the timber-clad lobby, Josh’s father exclaims in amazement: ‘I’ve never seen so much clown stuff in one place.’
After examining the zany collection, the duo checked into their room, number 210. This suite – priced at $130 – has been modeled after the 1978 horror film Halloween with a mural of serial killer Michael Myers on the wall.
Other themed rooms at the motel include ‘The It,’ ‘The Exorcist,’ and ‘Friday the 13th.’
On looking around his room, Josh said: ‘My first impression was that this was going to be a very strange place to spend the night.’
Along with the Michael Myers artwork, his room featured an eye-catching painting of two clowns above the twin beds complete with demonic-looking eyes and razor-sharp teeth.
Other things he points out in the YouTube video are patches of graffiti scrawled on the wall by former guests, ‘some stains on the ground,’ and a non-scary rose-print shower curtain.
Summing up the room ‘based on it not being the scariest motel in the United States,’ he says: ‘I would say this is a no frills motel, maybe like a slightly updated Motel 6.’

Come nightfall, he went with his father to explore the adjacent cemetery to see if they can detect any paranormal activity.
Despite the eerie surroundings, the duo did not come across any ghosts and their EMF device became confused by a telephone pole.
Before going to bed, Josh set up a camera in his room to create a time-lapse in case anything spooky happened, but again, the night was uneventful.
The next day, Josh and his father left the hotel with ‘I survived the Clown Motel’ stickers as souvenirs.
While it markets itself on being scary, the father and son duo didn’t find the motel that intimidating in the end.
They summed it up as a ‘fun spot… worth stopping by [for].’
To date, Josh’s video has been watched more than 25,000 times with many viewers thanking the filmmaker for sharing his motel experience.
One viewer wrote: ‘This is a great video. Growing up, nothing was more scary to me than clowns. And I still feel the same way.’
Another commented: ‘This looks like big fun and everything but I definitely could not stay there as I definitely believe in ghosts!’
The history of the Clown Motel
The Clown Motel was built around 1985 by siblings Leona and LeRoy David.
LeRoy David already owned the L and L Motel in town, but wanted to build another next to the cemetery where his father was buried.
The two thought it was the perfect place to house their small clown collection.
Bob Perchetti bought the motel from the David siblings in 1995.
The motel got a major boost in 2015 when it was featured in an episode of the TV show ‘Ghost Adventures.’
Viewers saw blurry footage of a life-sized clown mannequin sitting by the front desk. The mannequin’s hand moved on its own.
‘After that was when we started getting a lot more activity,’ Perchetti said. ‘A lot more people stopping.’
Donations poured in with clown figurines from Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand all joining the already extensive collection.
The motel draws its employees – about seven consistent part-time workers – from Tonopah. Some are locals, but others are outsiders who rolled into town without a place to stay.
Perchetti put the motel up for sale in 2017 for $900,000 and it was purchased two years later by Hame Anand and his brother Vijay Mehar.
Some of their additions have included two ‘jolly clown cutouts’ standing tall at 19ft on each accommodation block and a spread of themed rooms.
They also grew the previous owner’s clown collection from 600 to more than 3,000.
