Flight attendants have revealed why they hate storing wheelchairs in airplane cabins after a mom questioned why she gets so much ‘attitude’ from crew members when she requests they stow her three-year-old son’s wheelchair.
The unnamed mom – who is based in the US – took to Reddit to ask crew members why they ‘hate in-cabin wheelchair stowage so much.’
She explained that she has noticed that the flight attendants become ‘annoyed’ when she asks them to put away the wheelchair.
She questioned why this was – adding that she has since begun bringing Starbucks gift cards so crew members don’t get upset with her.

In a thread titled, ‘Flight Attendants,’ the mom-of-two said: ‘I understand that flight attendants seem to almost universally really hate it when we ask to use the onboard wheelchair compartment.
‘I’ve actually started bringing Starbucks gift cards for crew to apologize for using it because it really seems to annoy everyone a LOT.’
She explained that while she understands that cabin crew members tend to keep their personal belongings in the bins, she doesn’t get why they give a ton of ‘pushback’ when she makes a request.
She added: ‘I know y’all usually keep your own stuff in there if nobody asks for that compartment, but there’s so much pushback and attitude and sensitivity around it that there’s no way this is just a reaction to having to move your bag three feet over to a bin, is it?
‘Am I creating more of a problem for you than I understand?
‘This isn’t a veiled b****, I honestly want to understand why this is such a hated ask, since I imagine my own plane’s crew when I’m flying isn’t allowed to be forthcoming about whatever problem I’m causing for them.
‘We really do need it, but is there anything I can do to make our need of it less annoying for you?’
Flight attendants flooded the comments section and shared their reasoning – with a majority of them noting that their dislike for putting wheelchairs away comes from a force of habit, while others just said it was ‘annoying.’

One person said: ‘I’m sorry that you are getting pushback from those crew. I think you have identified the reason already by saying the size.
‘As someone who has spent some time in a wheelchair, I can appreciate your position. Unfortunately, humans are creatures of habit and it can be upsetting to break that habit to some.’
Another user added: ‘We are creatures of habit. The flight attendant in the front typically stores their bags there. We carry our lives in said bags. They can be very heavy for that reason.
‘We also have a host of bad experiences with having our bags accessed or even taken off the plane when stowed in the overhead bins. That being said, I’m not justifying attitude or pushback. First priority should always be accommodating a wheelchair. It’s quite rare that chairs aren’t gate checked (very few fit in the bin you are referencing).
‘So I think the pushback you have experienced is part surprise/part annoyance their routine is disrupted. Please don’t take it personally. Our work group is tired and arguably underpaid and some are just short on patience and empathy and simply don’t handle these situations as well as they should.
‘I’m sorry you have been made to feel like a nuisance. You are doing nothing wrong in expecting the wheelchair stowage be available for your son’s wheelchair.’
‘What are you wanting to put in the closet? Is it a wheelchair? Lots of planes closets are not big enough for modern wheelchairs,’ someone else added.

Another user wrote: ‘I can’t stand when passengers come on this Reddit to complain. It’s always a one-sided story. The OP conveniently left out the part where her husband snapped at the flight attendant.’
Someone else added: ‘Ripped my $15 tights on every single wheelchair I’ve ever had to store and secure.’
One person commented: ‘Because we used to have massive closets, for our bags, guitars, posters etc. We could lock up our personal belongings and not worry that they’d be stolen.
‘Now we have a tiny closet, in order to make space for more passenger seats. Not only that but now they expect us to stow wheelchairs which used to ALWAYS be checked underneath. It’s just annoying.
‘The cargo guys are used to things like this so I’m not sure why they don’t continue doing it, though I realize they might break it and that the airline wants to reduce DOT complaints, at our expense.’
