Fortnum & Mason to open Britain’s poshest beach huts, offering stylish decor, table service and luxurious picnic hampers

They could be described as Britain’s poshest beach huts.

High-end grocer Fortnum & Mason is opening a trio of beach huts ‘inspired by the nostalgia of summers spent on the British coast’ at Watergate Bay near Newquay, Cornwall.

The swish shacks, painted Fortnum & Mason’s signature shade of ‘Eau de Nil’ blue-green, have been designed by the store and are kitted out with handpicked homeware that includes ‘beautiful rugs and blankets to keep guests warm on chillier summer days’.

A statement from Fortnum & Mason, which was founded in 1707 and holds two royal warrants, says: ‘Every beach hut will enjoy the very best hospitality, including a pre-set picnic table, complete with stylish tableware and table service.’

To book a slot in the hut, beachgoers must buy a Fortnum hamper containing a picnic that ‘combines the very best fresh dishes from independent Cornish suppliers with the store’s famous picnic products’.

Two picnic menus – dreamt up in collaboration with nearby restaurant ‘Emily Scott Food’ – will be available, designed for either two or four people.

The first is ‘Seaside Picnic’, a hamper priced from £195 for two beachgoers. Inside there’s smoked Cornish trout with ale-infused bread for starters, followed by a Coronation crab sandwich.

As for dessert, there’s fig leaf soft serve ice cream and Cornish cheddar truckle cheese served with Fortnum’s crackers.

A bottle of Fortnum & Mason sparkling tea will also be included in the hamper, along with the store’s pistachio and clotted cream biscuits, savoury ‘181 Sauce’ and a box of cheese sables (cookies).

The second hamper, meanwhile, is the ‘indulgent’ Seaside Feast hamper, which comes in at £295 for two people.

This will need very careful guarding against the seagulls.

This time, the Cornish trout is served with Exmoor caviar and the crab sandwiches are paired with half a local lobster and black truffle mayo.

A lemon verbena posset features in the dessert offering, along with more gastronomic treats from the upmarket store.

Those who are unable to secure a beach hut can hire a Fortnum & Mason deckchair on the beach

The pop-up beach huts will open on July 25 at Watergate Bay (above) near Newquay

The picnic session is billed as the ‘ultimate summer experience’, setting out to ‘bring joy to people [that are] wanting to make the most of the UK summer’.

For those who are unable to secure a slot in a beach hut, Fortnum & Mason deckchairs can also be hired on the beach.

Bookings for the limited experience – which runs from July 25 to September 10 – have now opened. Each slot in the beach hut lasts two and a half hours. For more information or to make a booking, visit fortnumandmason.com or emilyscottfood.com.
