As the price of passports is set to rise this week to over £100, there’s an easy way to make a saving if you need to apply.
Submitting your passport application online – rather than by post – is £13.50 cheaper, a sizeable saving.
It comes as the cost of a standard adult passport application made online is set to rise above £100 for the first time in British history.
Meanwhile, the price for an urgent one-day turnaround will soar to £239.50.
Under the new proposals, British adults applying online will see fees climb from £94.50 to £102, while the cost for a child’s passport will rise from £61.50 to £66.50.
But for British adults applying by post, that rises to £115.50 – £13.50 more than online.
According to the GOV.UK website: ‘The government will introduce new fees for passport applications on 8 April 2026.
‘The proposals, which are subject to approval by Parliament, will include the following: the fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will rise from £94.50 to £102 for adults and £61.50 to £66.50 for children.
A standard adult application for a new passport varies in cost – depending on whether you do it online or via post
‘Postal applications will increase from £107 to £115.50 for adults and £74 to £80 for children.
‘The fee for a premium service (one day) application made from within the UK will rise from £222 to £239.50.
‘The fee for a standard online application when applying from overseas for a UK passport will rise from £108 to £116.50 for adults and £70 to £75.50 for children.
‘Overseas standard paper applications will increase from £120.50 to £130 for adults and £82.50 to £89 for children.
‘The new fees will help the Home Office to continue to move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.
‘The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders.’

It marks the third consecutive year of significant price hikes; with an eight per cent increase this year following jumps of 7 per cent and 9 per cent in previous years, the cost of an adult online passport has risen by roughly £26 since early 2023.
With standard renewals currently taking roughly three weeks, and potentially longer during peak holiday surges, officials are advising the public to ‘apply in good time’ to avoid travel disruptions and the impending fee hike.
Consumer advocates have raised concerns that the rising costs may price out low-income families from international travel, especially as the ‘one-day’ emergency service now costs nearly a quarter of a thousand pounds.
Applying via post for a passport takes longer than an online application too.
You can use an online service to apply for, renew, replace or update your passport and pay for it online.
