I travel the world full time… here are the overrated destinations to skip and the hidden gems to visit instead

A man who is traveling the world full-time and has visited over 80 different countries has shared the overrated destinations you should skip – and the hidden gems you should go to instead.

When Carl, now 33, originally from Austria, finished school, he didn’t dream of owning his own house or car like most people his age.

Instead, he longed to get out and see the world – a passion that he developed after a trip to China as a teen.

‘That trip was so different from anything else I had experienced until then and really sparked a fascination with traveling in me that I did not have to that extent before,’ he explained during an exclusive chat with the Daily Mail.

So, after college, he began aggressively saving his money to make that dream a reality, while working as a product manager for a ‘large company that supplies laboratory devices and products for medical research.’

In 2023, he officially quit his job, sold his apartment, got rid of almost all of his belongings and set out on his adventure.

He has been traveling full-time ever since, moving from city to city and living out of a suitcase.

He has now been to a whopping 81 different countries, and along the way, he’s uncovered a slew of secret spots that he thinks more people should visit on vacation.

He told the Daily Mail that Central Asia, specifically Kazakhstan, Borneo, Laos, Jordan, Armenia, Bolivia, Nicaragua, or Timor-Leste are all underrated places that he suggests others visit.

But there’s also some often sought-after destinations that he admitted weren’t as good as he expected.

Particularly, he listed Bali and Thailand, explaining that they were a little too ‘crowded’ for his liking.

Carl admitted that living on the road isn’t always easy, as he explained that it can be ‘really tiring’ and extremely ‘lonely’ at times.

‘I certainly miss having my own bed, my own closet, etc.,’ he confessed.

It can also be expensive but he saves money by staying in hostels and taking night buses instead of flights when possible.

‘Flights, transportation and accommodations are usually the biggest cost factor and minimizing their impact on your budget can really help,’ he explained.

‘I mostly stay in hostel dorm rooms to save money on accommodation.’

Carl admitted that he doesn’t think his lifestyle is sustainable long-term, but added that his ‘adventurous spirit’ will never leave him

Over the course of his three-year endeavor, he’s also uncovered a slew of important safety tips.

‘Stay vigilant about your surroundings and don’t flash expensive things out in public all the time,’ he suggested.

‘And do a bit of research so you know where you shouldn’t go (especially at night) in places that are known to be less safe. That usually does the trick.’

Carl admitted that he doesn’t think his lifestyle is sustainable long-term, but added that his ‘adventurous spirit’ will never leave him.

‘I think this kind of lifestyle can be lived for a certain amount of time but the novelty will wear off eventually,’ he explained.

And despite the hard parts, Carl vowed that the positives far outweigh the downsides.

‘All the experiences that I got to have made up for it! The advantages always outweigh the disadvantages,’ he said.
