I’m a female solo traveller – here are three LIES I tell men wanting to chat

Travelling alone as a woman can often be a daunting experience, and sometimes you have to think carefully about how to keep yourself safe.

An American travel influencer has revealed the three lies she uses as a solo female backpacker that she advises others should be using too.

The TikTok by @monicaroams has been seen by over 376,000 people and saved by an additional 4,000.

The influencer explained ‘You should never lie, but as a solo female traveller you kind of have to. It’s actually crazy how often I have to use these lies, so these will help.’

Always say you have a boyfriend… no matter what

The first tip from Monica is to always say you have a boyfriend, even if you don’t.

She explained ‘Number one, if people ask whether you have a boyfriend, you do, no matter what. Unless, it’s someone that you’re actually interested in.

‘If you’re lesbian, literally say that you gave a boyfriend too, because I feel like men will always think that being a lesbian is like hot so that will just make them more attracted to you.

‘So no matter what, just say that you’ve got a boyfriend or a husband, even better.’

She added: ‘Let’s be real, they’re usually old men that are asking you this question, just seeing if you’re single so they can probably hit on you.

‘I’ve made the mistake of being truthful and saying no I don’t have a boyfriend, but then it makes the interaction so much more creepy because now they’re trying to get with me.

‘This also works if someone asks for your number and you don’t wanna give it to them, just be like I have a boyfriend.’

Always say your friend is waiting for you…

Next, she advises that you should always lie if you’re alone:

‘If anybody ever asks if you are alone, you’re never alone baby, even if you are alone.

‘You never know what their plan is or who they are so it’s just best not to give information like that to random people.

‘Random older men have asked me this question while I’m just sitting and eating by myself. I’m like oh no, my friends at the hostel, she’s just waiting for me.

‘No matter what, you’ve got a friend somewhere, okay?’

She explained ‘If anybody ever asks if you are alone, you’re never alone baby, even if you are alone. You never know what their plan is or who they are so it’s just best not to give information like that to random people’

And… you DON’T know where you’re staying

Finally, even if it’s not believable, the traveller says you should never give away where you’re staying.

She advised ‘Never tell anybody where you’re staying because usually they’ll be like ‘oh my gosh, are you travelling by yourself?’ Or like ‘oh my gosh, where are you staying?’

‘I get it’s part of conversation but also you don’t know what their intentions are, so you gotta just stay low-key and not give out too much information.

‘So, especially when I’m feeling a weird vibe and it’s someone that I don’t want to be talking to me, I’m like oh I forgot, I don’t know where my hostel is, it’s probably that way.

The influencer added ‘an alternative answer is ‘I’m actually travelling with my parents right now and we’re on vacation’.

‘Don’t be afraid to be creative, this is your time to build a whole character story.’

Concluding the clip, she told her viewers ‘those are definitely three lies that you need to be telling all the time when you’re a solo female traveller because let’s be honest, when you’re a young solo female traveller there are a bunch of older men who just randomly come up to you and start talking to you.

‘I love conversation but sometimes it can be very creepy so these are lies that will help you in your endeavours’.

Commenters joined the conversation by sharing their own tips – one user wrote ‘I used to wear a very cheap “wedding” ring when travelling alone’.

Another added ‘better to say husband, they can still persist if it’s a ‘boyfriend’. I made the mistake of saying where I was staying and got stalked in India’.

Someone else advised ‘Get a fake wedding ring. It helps with the language barrier, just need to point at your finger,’ to which Monica replied ‘Ooo I love this’.

Others that swear by the advice said ‘i have used all. not even all my friends know where i live, let alone someone i meet during a trip’ and ‘done all this instinctively!’.
