I’m allergic to running and nearly died after dashing for a flight

A woman who claims that she’s ‘allergic to running’ has detailed the moment that she ‘almost died’ after rushing to catch a flight and suffering from a severe reaction.

Divz Mangat, 27, was traveling from her home in Canada to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic last month with her sister, Dee Mangat, and some friends.

The ladies were forced to race through the airport to avoid missing their flight, and soon after, Divz started breaking out in hives.

They got so bad that she had to use an EpiPen out of fear that her throat might close up – and the incident has left her convinced that has exercise-induced anaphylaxis, a rare disorder in which in patients suffer from allergic reactions after participating in physical activity.

‘For the past few months, every time I run or get stressed out, I’ve been breaking out in hives,’ she explained to Newsweek recently.

‘I wasn’t sure if it was due to running or stress. But that day, I realized it 100 per cent has to be due to me running and being stressed out.’

Divz’s sister, Dee, documented the airport incident and shared it to TikTok, where it got more than 6.6 million views – and left many people on the web stunned over the condition.

‘How [Divz] almost died because of a delayed flight,’ she began in the viral video.

‘Our first first flight was delayed and we have a connecting flight … so we had to start running to the gate,’ she continued as a clip of the girls dashing through the airport flashed across the screen.

‘This is when things started to get really bad. Divz has been having severe allergic reactions but she doesn’t know what she’s allergic too. Once we got on the plane she started breaking out into hives.’

It then cut to a video of the two girls sitting on the plane as Divz showed her hives – which had developed on her face and arms – to the camera.

Dee explained that her sister tried taking Benedryl but that didn’t help, so she was forced to use the EpiPen.

Can someone really be allergic to running? What you need to know about exercise-induced anaphylaxis

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis is a rare disorder in which in patients suffer from allergic reactions after participating in physical activity.

Symptoms include itchy skin, hives, flushing, wheezing, nausea, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea following exercise.

‘If physical activity continues, patients may progress to more severe symptoms, including angioedema [swelling under the skin], hypotension [low blood pressure], and, ultimately, cardiovascular collapse,’ Medscape reported.

In the end, she said the treatment helped and that she felt ‘fine’ afterwards, other than feeling ‘a little drowsy.’

While chatting with Newsweek, Divz explained that she’s had to go to the hospital ‘a few times’ over the mysterious allergic reactions.

The hospital doctors could not figure out what was causing them, so she was told to see a specialist.

She’s currently waiting for an appointment and in the mean time, she’s trying to take things slow.

‘The whole trip [in the DR] the girls were like, “Don’t run. Just walk where you have to go,”‘ she explained.

‘I’m very cautious of not making my heart beat really fast. I’m just trying to be very calm and make sure it doesn’t happen again.’

According to Medscape, symptoms of EIA include itchy skin, hives, flushing, wheezing, nausea, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea following exercise.

‘If physical activity continues, patients may progress to more severe symptoms, including angioedema [swelling under the skin], hypotension [low blood pressure], and, ultimately, cardiovascular collapse,’ it added.

While Dee admitted that she wasn’t too sure about her sister’s claims that she was allergic to running at first, after the airport incident, she became convinced.

‘I was like, “Yeah, OK, sure. I’ve never heard of that.” I just thought this was kind of a crazy phenomenon,’ she recalled.

After Dee’s TikTok gained so much attention online, thousands of people took to the comment section. Some who also suffer from EIA spoke out and shared their own experiences

‘I’ve never seen somebody that’s allergic to running – but it ended up being a pretty eventful video.’

After Dee’s TikTok gained so much attention online, thousands of people took to the comment section to share their thoughts.

While some people were surprised over the condition, others who also suffer from EIA spoke out and shared their own experiences.

Some medical professionals even got involved and gave Divz advice – and she was very grateful for their expertise.

‘Seeing other people having similar things it does help, in a way,’ she said.
