Inside the Dutch fairytale theme park a mother claims is an ‘amazing’ and ‘cheaper’ alternative to Disneyland

When you think of a place that all children dream of, the Mickey Mouse ears and iconic princess castle of Disneyland instantly spring to mind.

However, it can be easy to forget there are other options out there and the happiest place on Earth doesn’t come without a hefty price tag – one man recently took to Reddit to slam the parks.

He claimed the high ticket prices and long wait times have become so ‘atrocious’ that visiting the tourist hot spot is no longer ‘worth the effort or the money’.

Another father made a TikTok where he claimed he made a ‘huge mistake’ by visiting the park’ in Paris and is ’embarrassed at how much money he spent’.

So, it’s expected that parents are casting their eyes, and money, elsewhere – one British mother has hailed a park in the Netherlands as being a ‘cheaper’ alternative.

The TikTok by The Travel Mum (@thetravelmum) has been seen by over 2.3 million people in just 24 hours.

She told viewers  ‘We have been told this theme park is better and cheaper than Disneyland, let’s go and check it out.

‘Efteling is a theme park in the Netherlands and with no queue to get in, tickets starting at just £34, and these cool little trolleys that you can pull bigger kids around in, I’m already impressed.

‘As you walk around, there’s all the magic and attention to detail that you get from a Disney park.’

The initial praise didn’t stop, as the travel pro went on to compliment the short queue times and amazing rides.

She added ‘This park is huge, there’s a great app you can download and as you can see, the majority of queue times are less than 10 minutes.

‘There are some amazing indoor rides which absolutely blew Leo away. There’s a fairytale forest where we spent two whole hours exploring.

‘The good thing bout this park is there’s also a lot of bigger rides for adults and big kids.

‘There are tons of themed restaurants and all the food we had was delicious and really well priced.’

The family liked the park so much that they didn’t mind that the shows were all spoken in Dutch – she claimed it ‘didn’t stop’ them ‘enjoying them’.

She concluded ‘Overall, this place is fantastic value – I’ll be posting more about it soon, so let me know what you want to do.’

Efteling is a fantasy themed park with fairytales at it’s heart – since opening in 1952, it has attracted more than 100 million visitors.

It’s attractions reflect elements from ancient myths and fairy tales, legends, fables, and folklore.

From the wooden rollercoaster ‘Joris en de Draak’ meaning ‘George and the Dragon’ to a magical forest and a creepy ‘cursed villa,’ every ride is based on a story.

Located in Kaatsheuvel, it’s the largest theme park in the Netherlands – although it’s still a relatively hidden gem amongst tourists.

One user commented on The Travel Mum’s video ‘How expensive is Disneyland? Because de Efteling is already really expensive’.

Another added ‘B.t.w. NO Dutch person will say the Efteling is cheap. It’s however a must when you have children!,’ to which the mum replied ‘It’s definitely a cheap alternative to Disneyland – everything from tickets,  parking, food, hotel much cheaper’.

Others who are fans of the fairytale park wrote ‘Love Efteling! I recommend for anyone to visit! So happy you and your family enjoyed it!’ and ‘every dutch person will defend Efteling with their life’.

Someone else recommended ‘A few years ago we went to Astérix Park in France. It was brilliant! Middle of summer and barely any queues’ and another added ‘try Europa Park in Germany’.
