In addition to the towering cliffs, Ouray boasts a slew of colorful buildings, making it the perfect spot for your next photo op.

Ouray is situated in the heart of the San Juan Mountains and has become known to travelers as the ‘Switzerland of America.’

It has also been dubbed as Colorado’s best kept secret after Aspen achieved viral success when Hollywood heavyweights decided to make it their new go-to destination.

The town is formed by rugged mountains and sits at an elevation level of 7,800.

Ouray has also been dubbed the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado and its rich history dates back to 1876 – with Ouray being incorporated just two months after Colorado became a state.

Up until the 1980s, Ouray was known as a mining town. However, it soon shifted towards tourism and took advantage of its glorious views.

And soon enough, Ouray became known for its offerings of winter sports such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing.

It then developed into a world-class travel destination that welcomed a slew of winter enthusiasts.

Since it fully immersed itself into a hot tourism spot, the town has shifted its focal point to its shimmering ice monuments.

To appeal to winter lovers, the town began hosting an Ice Festival, which brings people to climb the translucent blue ice to get to the top of the snowy mountains.

Ouray’s ice parks first opened in 1994 when alpinist Jeff Lowe brought in a few hundred people to see the stunning views.

And while Aspen may have influencers and lucky hat brand Kemo Sabe, Ouray has a slew of handmade jewelry and other goods for tourists to take home with them.

Ouray also has plenty of museums for visitors to enjoy while there too.
