I’ve been to all 50 states in the US – THESE are the best five and one of them is so underrated, I’m buying a place there

A woman revealed her top five favorite states in a video she posted on her social media pages in November 2023.

Travel expert Nicole Sunderland’s video on TikTok is still going viral three months after she posted it, and other users are continuing to comment on what they believe are the top five US states.

Two states that have been big topics of positive and negative conversations are Utah and Michigan.

Sunderland, who’s traveled to all 50 states, confirmed in the comment section that she will actually be buying a place in Michigan.

The frequent traveler gave several reasons as to why each state earned a spot in her top five in her video that’s received nearly one million views on TikTok alone.

Sunderland began talking about Hawaii, calling the group of volcanic islands ‘absolutely stunning.’

‘You’ll find black sand beaches, green sand beaches, stunning waters… So much natural beauty,’ she stated.

Hawaii is usually a popular state individuals like to travel to, but its the number of tourists declined in the last few months of 2023 following the Lahaina wildfires.

Besides seemingly beautiful beaches and sunsets, Hawaii is the home of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

A variety of annual events and food festivals also occur on the island.

Hawaii, nicknamed the Aloha State, became part of the US in August 1959

The TikToker is also intrigued by Michigan, the state where she plans on buying a house.

Sunderland admitted that loves Michigan, also known as the Great Lakes State, ‘so much.’

‘We have crystal clear lakes, a fantastic boating community, cute towns and islands you can visit – did I mention out fall foliage,’ she stated.

Sunderland also noted that there are ‘a lot of breweries’ in Michigan.

Michigan is one of the most controversial states in the list based on the heated debate in the video’s comment section, with several commenters disagreeing with Sunderland’s opinion.

However, she snapped back at some of those TikTokers and even admitted that she’s ‘not trying to appeal to everyone.’

Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State because it’s the only state in the US that borders four of the five Great Lakes

Although Michigan is the state that Sunderland will be buying a house in, she also had plenty of great things to say about Florida.

The Sunshine State comes in third on Sunderland’s list, with the travel expert admitting that individuals ‘love to hate’ the state.

‘No one can deny the fact that Florida has tons of gorgeous towns, great beaches, especially if you’re in the Panhandle or down in the South region,’ she said.

Sunderland spoke highly about the ‘absolutely stunning’ Florida Keys that have great sand banks and all inclusive resorts.

US News recently ranked Key West as the 10th best place to visit in Florida earlier this year.

According to the list, Key West is known for its ‘free-spirited locals, colorful conch-style homes and coral reefs ripe for snorkeling and scuba diving.’

A Florida-based TikToker appeared to challenge Sunderland’s opinion of his home state and did not include it in his top five list.

Nicknamed ‘The Last Frontier,’ Alaska is a state that Sunderland traveled to for the first time in 2019.

‘It absolutely blew me away with its beauty. Some of the best things I’ve done here is flying over glaciers, kayaking and boating out in waterfalls… You cannot convince me that Alaska is not stunning,’ she stated.

The traveler included a clip of two black bears in her TikTok video of Alaska, which is known for its incredible wildlife.

One reason tourists have traveled to Alaska is to see the state’s Big 5: bear, moose, Dall sheep, wolf and caribou.

In the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Alaska can be found humpback whales, orcas and gray whales.

However, if anyone is looking to find black bears like the one in Sunderland’s video, the best places to go are likely Alaska’s trails along Southeast and Southcentral Alaska.

Utah is a popular state to ski, but its also known for its beehives all over different Utah signs, monuments and buildings.

Despite assuming that she’d ‘get a lot of crap’ for naming Utah as one of her favorite states, other TikTokers commented that they actually find the state quite beautiful

Bears can also be spotted in Utah, which is the last state Sunderland talks about in her video.

Despite assuming that she’d ‘get a lot of crap’ for naming Utah as one of her favorite states, other TikTokers commented that they actually find the state quite beautiful.

‘All the national parks, the ski resorts, everything that Utah has to offer,’ said Sunderland when discussing ‘the real beauty’ of the state.

Utah is a popular state to ski, but its also known for its beehives all over different Utah signs, monuments and buildings – thus giving Utah its nickname of the Beehive State.

The state is also known for a variety of outdoor landmarks such as the Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky district and Bryce Canyon.

Stargazers are known to have a great time visiting Bryce Canyon in June, which is when the annual Astronomy Festival takes place.

Park rangers also offer year-round programs such as winter snowshoe and full moon hikes.

However, some of the activities do require everyone to sign up ahead of time or be subjected to a lottery.
