A chaotic Jetstar flight has been aborted amid ‘wild’ turbulence which led to screaming and vomiting passengers going airborne in the cabin.
Any sense of calm on board the 8.30am Auckland to Queenstown Jetstar flight vanished as it began its descent to the mountain-side airport at the famous skiing town on Sunday.
One teenage passenger said the turbulence felt like being on a ‘rollercoaster’.
At one point the youth thought the plane might crash.

Passengers have revealed the horrific moment a Hawaiian airlines flight from Honolulu to Sydney hit severe turbulence and left seven injured.
‘All hell broke loose… Everyone was just screaming and throwing up on the flight,’ Dylan Steele, 18, told the New Zealand Herald.
‘I was airborne on my seat, it was just so wild.
‘All I could hear was the sounds of people being sick and that was with headphones on.’
Mr Steele claimed he saw the wing ‘flapping like a feather’ and thought he might not survive the flight.
A spokesman for Jetstar confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that the flight did turn back but not because of turbulence.
It was aborted due to strong winds at Queensland airport.
Flights are often delayed from take-off or landing at 65km/h but passenger jets have been known to land in winds of over 90km/h.
Winds gusted up to 150km/h in parts of the South Island on Sunday.
‘Aircraft are designed to withstand turbulence far more severe than is ever encountered and pilots and crew are well practised and trained to manage turbulence,’ Jetstar said in the statement.
‘We sincerely apologise to customers for the disruption to their travel plans due to strong winds affecting Queenstown.
‘Our teams are working to get customers to their destination as quickly as possible, however safety is our first priority.’
Far more dangerous than turbulence is the risk of passengers not wearing a seat-belt hitting their heads on the cabin ceiling – or being hit by unsecured objects.
