A lion sanctuary has come up with a way to get up close and personal with the big cats – by placing the visitors in a cage.

The GG lion sanctuary in Harrismith, South Africa, allows visitors to stand within a photography cage to see the stunning African lions in a safe and humane way.

Photographer and director of the non-profit company, Suzanne Scott, 53, shared these amazing pictures showing lucky animal enthusiasts meeting these beautiful lions.

She said: ‘We have been offering this experience for almost two years now and the safety of both our guests and big cats is the top priority.

‘The original photography cage was donated to us by a German professional photographer who regularly visits, which we adapted into the lion experience cube after a German TV show filmed here using a plexiglass cube.

‘The cube is regularly checked by an engineer to ensure it can safely carry the weight should a lion jump on top of it.

GG lion sanctuary is expecting another 17 lions to arrive later this year – it’s in the process of rescuing lions from a closed-down zoo in the Middle East

The cube gives the sanctuary a bit of extra income – which is used to help it care for the lions

The sanctuary claims that the cube offers the lions enrichment, that it stimulates them both mentally and physically

‘It offers the lions enrichment in the form of mental and physical stimulation – which is good for any animals in captivity.

‘As a non-profit sanctuary relying solely on donations, the cube’s rates offer us a small income which directly helps us to feed and protect the lions in our care.

‘We are expecting another 17 to arrive later this year, which we are currently in the process of rescuing from a closed-down zoo in the Middle East.’
