In this trip, we are taking you to one of the most historical places in Malaysia, which is Melaka also spelled Malacca. We will show you Melaka top attractions and tell you things to do in Melaka.

Rich with heritage buildings, ancient landmarks and colonial structures, Melaka was a Sultanate region before it got conquered by the Portuguese in 1511. They controlled the city of Melaka for over 130 years and built the A Famosa Fortress.

The Dutch later defeated the Portuguese in 1641 to take over the city and expand the Portuguese Fortress by building the Stadthuys. They ruled Melaka for 184 years.

The British defeated the Dutch in 1824 and ruled for over 133 years before Melaka became part of Malaysia when it got its independence in 1957.

There was a short Japanese occupation during World War II, between 1942 and 1945.

Top attractions and top places to visit in Melaka in 2021: In this video, we have visited the places below:

1. Melaka Dutch Square: This was the Dutch administrative place, where they built of of the most famous places in Melaka which is the Stadthuys, built in the 1650’s, it used to be the Dutch Governor office.

Beside the Stadthuys, there is the Christ Church, built in 1753, it was the Dutch worship place.

Today, the Stadthuys is a History and Ethnography Museum, which showcases Melaka customs and traditions as well as the city’s rich history, from the great Malay Sultanate to the Portuguese, Dutch and British occupations.

The entrance fee is RM12 for foreigners and RM6 for locals. The ticket allows you to visit also the Museum of Education, Admiral Cheng Ho Museum, who was a famous explorer who made seven voyages to the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia in the 1400’s. He is also known for his role in helping the then Sultan of Melaka to get married with the Princess of the Ming Dynasty Emperor, that later on led to create the Baba Nyonya Culture in Melaka.

Within the same vicinity, there are the Governor’s Museum and the Democratic Government Museum.

Facing the Melaka River, we have Bastion Middleburg built by the Dutch as a defensive wall in the 1660s. We also have the Melaka Sultanate Watermill.

2. Proclamation of Independence Memorial: It displays records and photographs on the early history of the Malay Sultanate. There are other museums such as the Malay & Islamic World, UMNO, and Melaka Alive.

3. A Famosa: A’Famosa is Malacca’s best known sightseeing spot. Originally constructed by Alfonso de Albuquerque, the remains is the gatehouse which is Porta De Santiago.

4. St. Paul’s Church: Built in 1521 by Duarte Coelho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life during a storm at the South China Sea.

It fell to the Dutch and then later on to the British.

5. Dutch Graveyard: The Dutch graveyard is visible on every corner of Saint Paul’s Church.

6. Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum: This is a wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace. It was the most elaborate royal palace ever constructed in the world in 1459.

7. Flor De La Mar Museum: This is a replica of Flor de la Mar which was built in 1502 in Lisbon. It was the largest vessel of its kind at the time.

8. Taming Sari Tower: It gives you a bird’s eye view of Melaka

9. Melaka River: Mainly used for Melaka River Cruise (ticket RM30) to enjoy the architectural beauty of Melaka by cruising past historical buildings.

10. Jonker Walk and Pahlawan Walk: They are the Night Markets comes 7 PM. The Famous Dutch Hereen Street is right behind Jonker Walk. There is a Dr. Gan Boon Leong Statute along the Jonker Walk Street.

11. Malaysia Prison Museum: If you wan to know how prisoners were treated in the 1800’s, then come visit this place.

12. Melaka Straits Mosque: Build in 2006, it is located on a man-made island

13. Klebang Beach: The main beach in Melaka

14. Melaka Sand Dunes: Not well known, but if you want to enjoy the most stunning sunset in Melaka, then do no miss the Sand Dunes.
