The National Trust for Historic Preservation today unveiled its annual list of America’s most-endangered historic places.
The list aims to bring to light architectural and cultural heritage spots that are at risk of destruction or irreparable damage, whether threatened by neglect, insufficient funds, development or public policy.
The nonprofit, which works to save America’s historic places, touts that the list is making a difference: In the 32-year history of the list, of the 300 places the list has brought into the spotlight, fewer than 5% of the sites have been lost.
“For over 30 years, our 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list has called attention to threatened one-of-a-kind treasures throughout the nation and galvanized Americans to help save them,” Katherine Malone-France, interim chief preservation officer of the trust, said in a news release. “This year’s list reflects both the diversity of America’s historic places and the variety of threats they face. … We know that this year’s list will inspire people to speak out for the cherished places in their own communities that define our nation’s past.”
