Now six months old, Jarang was first orangutan to be born at the zoo in 20 years
It may be his comfy bed, or the fact that he’s a source of enormous pride to his mum. Regardless, little Jarang the orangutan woke up with a big smile on his face.
And, as for that mischievous glint in his eye, it could have been copied straight from King Louie – Walt Disney’s singing orangutan in The Jungle Book movie.
The moment Jarang – whose name means ‘rare’ in Malay – stirred from his slumbers at Blackpool Zoo was captured by photographer Gary Cox, 53.
Now six months old, Jarang was the first orangutan to be born there in 20 years. And that’s not all that makes him jolly important.
He’s a Bornean orangutan – a species that now numbers around 100,000 and is predicted to decline by 86 per cent by 2025 from its 1950 population.

His birth on June 14 was hailed as ‘very special’ by the zoo, which takes part in the European Endangered Species Programme.
Jarang’s mum, Jingga, came to Blackpool in 2017 from Barcelona. His father, Kawan, came from the Netherlands, in 2022.
Mr Cox, from Manchester, said: ‘Jarang was very close to his mum by the viewing glass. I’m sure Jingga was showing him off to us.
She looks extremely proud and makes sure everyone can see her little pride and joy.’
