Some people like to experience life on the edge – literally.
Incredible footage and images show China’s nerve-shredding ‘knife-edge’ mountain, which has a ridge so steep, narrow and smooth that it resembles a blade.
And yet tourists still traverse it, despite the very obvious danger – there are no safety fences.
One reason for the risk-taking is that conquering the ridge – located in Gaoyi Ridge Scenic Area – is supposed to bring good luck. Some might say hikers-in-waiting must first have sourced a good supply from elsewhere.
One YouTuber who tackled it gave up near the top, revealing close to the summit that he was ‘trembling’.

The traveller, who goes by the username ‘Walk East’, filmed his entire exploration of Gaoyi Ridge, revealing ‘steep stairs’ and ‘amazing views’ at the beginning of his journey, along with plenty of walkways with handrails.
He then goes on to tackle knife-edge mountain, revealing a heart-stopping tiny walkway and otherworldly smooth edges.
As he inches his way along the ridge, he pauses, revealing breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape and sheer drops on either side.

Then a subtitle appears that reads: ‘Sorry, I have no guts to keep going.’
A moment later, one of two daredevil tourists who could be seen taking pictures at the top walks back down and squeezes past, saying that he’s ‘frightened’.
‘Walk East’ follows him, relieved that he ‘has someone to follow’.
Gaoyi Ridge Scenic Area (also referred to as Gaoqi Ling) covers 20 square miles and can be found in Chenzhou in Hunan Province.
As well as knife-edge mountain, it features lagoons and multi-coloured rock faces.
