It’s a hotel stay that’s truly out of this world.

An Italian design company has dreamt up a luxury UFO-style pod that’s part bedroom and part motorboat. The so-called ‘Pearlsuite’ – designed with hotels and holiday resorts in mind – has an ensuite bedroom and a kitchenette with a wine cooler, capped by a retractable roof.

It also has a small motor and an autopilot function, with guests able to drive the pod between set points at speeds of up to 6mph using their smartphones. The pod isn’t designed for high seas adventures, but would be able to pootle around bays and along coastlines for up to six hours at a time.

Each pod, ‘equipped with top technology features’, would cost £230,000 to build.

The suite measures 22ft (7m) in diameter and is ringed by 3.2ft- (1m-) wide external decks for guests to lounge on. Internally, there is up to 236 sq ft (22 sq m) of space to play with.

The concept is the brainchild of designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, of Lazzarini design studio, on behalf of the Italian water transport company Jet Capsule.

Multiple anchored suites could become a floating resort, or alternatively could be used as a reception or for a restaurant

The pods are said to be ideal for hotels and resorts that want to boost their capacity in a short period of time as, according to the designer, they’re ‘designed in order to be assembled in a very fast time’.

Lazzarini says that multiple anchored suites could become a floating resort or be used as a reception or restaurant.

According to the designer, the pod, which has an electric motor, has ‘zero carbon footprint’ and comes ‘at a very low implementation cost’.

On the left is the floorplan of a Pearlsuite, which offers up to 236 sq ft (22 sq m) of space internally. The pod would rely on solar power to fuel the air conditioning, lighting, fridge and other appliances on board

Solar power energy will be used to fuel the air conditioning, lighting, fridge and other appliances.

According to the designer, the storage in the pod’s hull can house ‘additional power sources and systems’. For instance, a fuel cell hydrogen generator (a clean generator that emits water) can be mounted in order to produce energy onboard, ensuring energy is available when there’s little sunshine, or when rainclouds loom.

The suite can also be equipped with a gyroscope stabiliser system, which reduces tilting movement.

There will also be a basic version of the pod available for £38,000 that’s designed for partygoers at beach clubs. It’s not equipped with a toilet, and has no engine, solar power or stabiliser.

It’s understood that the Pearlsuite design is a concept awaiting interest from potential investors or resort owners.
