Revealed: The sunny destination Brits are flocking to escape the rain – with flights up to £450 cheaper now than next month

Brits have battled persistent rain over the past few weeks so it’s perhaps unsurprising many are looking to escape the bad weather.

Although there are several sunny destinations nearby in Europe, it appears people are happy to seek somewhere further away too.

Flight searches for routes to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, have shot up 103 per cent, according to Kayak.

The huge surge has been detected for travel between February and March, compared with the same period last year.

Hanoi sees average temperatures of around 24°C in February and March – much warmer than the UK.

It’s also known for being one of the most affordable cities in the world.

A local beer comes to just 25,000₫ (72p), according to Numbeo,

Meanwhile, a soft drink costs around 12,076.92₫ (35p) and a three course meal for two will typically set you back 800,000₫ (£22.90).

Travelling to Hanoi is affordable if you act fast too, as flights are currently almost £450 cheaper compared to March.

This week, return flights to the Vietnamese capital are averaging at £628.

Meanwhile, mid-March departures could set you back £1,071.

Travel writer Hugo Brown recently went to Hanoi and wrote in the Daily Mail how he spent just £19.60 in one day – it covered plenty including one night’s accommodation and three meals with a drink.

Elsewhere, traditional winter-sun favourite destinations that are much closer to the UK have seen a slight decrease in popularity compared to last year.

Interest in Arrecife, Lanzarote for example is down 11 per cent.

Other far-away destinations are seeing an increase in search interest too, including Colombo which has experienced a 20 per cent year-on-year rise.

Cancún is attracting attention too, and has seen a 14 per cent increase.

Kayak travel expert Rachel Mumford said: ‘Our search insights show Brits are prepared to travel further for sunshine, but value still plays a huge role in where they book.’

She explained how Hanoi had gained particular attention because of its affordability and good weather.

‘Vietnam stands out because it combines reliable warm weather with low everyday costs once you arrive, making a long-haul trip feel far more affordable,’ Rachel added.

‘We’re also seeing that travellers who can be flexible with when they fly are able to unlock significant savings by travelling earlier rather than waiting until later in the season.’
