Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten’s London home where he lived at the height of his fame in late 70s goes on the market for £1.55m
Punk fans can get their hands on the London home Johnny Rotten lived in at the height of his fame – if they’re willing to part with £1.55m.
The stylish three-bedroom maisonette doesn’t look like the home of a rock star now after a major refurbishment, but in the late 1970s it was the ‘best club in London’.
John Lydon – aka Rotten, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols – moved into the home at Gunter Grove in Chelsea in 1978, in the immediate aftermath of the demise of the band.
Lydon was seen as a figurehead of the punk movement with hits like ‘Anarchy in the UK’ and ‘God Save the Queen’.
The 67-year-old later set up a new band, Public Image Ltd, and Gunter Grove in Chelsea became their base for three years.

Former Clash guitarist Keith Levene described the flat as ‘the best club in London’ and he and drummer Jim Walker eventually moved in too, with many other punk and dub lovers often joining them to party and argue into the night.
In an interview in 2018, Lydon described it as ‘living on the edge of total collapse’.

Now the property has been refurbished and modernised with muted colours on the wall, a chandelier in the living room and sleek bathrooms.
The only hint at its rock past is an unofficial blue plaque marking Rotten’s time there.
The 1,369 sq ft property is spread over three floors with a kitchen, dining room and reception room on the first floor, main bedroom with en suite, second bedroom and family bathroom on the second floor and a third bedroom and the private roof terrace on the third.

Agne Karuzaite from Strutt & Parker said: ’45 Gunter Grove is an exceptional maisonette, notwithstanding its rock star past.
‘The current owner has created a fantastic space with notes of the eccentricities of its past inhabitant, Johnny Rotten.
‘The buyer also has the opportunity to purchase the apartment completely furnished, making this an opportunity to not only buy a slice of London history, but a well-finished home in a sought after Chelsea location.’
