Singer Paul Young reveals why America is his favourite holiday destination

Checking in… Singer Paul Young reveals why America is his favourite holiday destination and recalls the time he ate a duck’s tongue in Taiwan

Singer Paul Young checks in to our travel Q&A this week

This week singer Paul Young checks in to our travel Q&A.

He talks about his earliest holiday memories, taking ‘fun-packed’ RV trips across the U.S, eating duck’s tongue in Taiwan and being asked to sing in airports.

EARLIEST HOLIDAY?

Growing up, we visited Devon and Cornwall where I learnt to surf and had my first horse riding lesson.

We stayed in caravan parks and I have fond memories of Paignton and Newquay.

TOP DESTINATION?

America, when I did three RV trips with the kids, Levi, Layla and Grady.

They were fun-packed, including horse riding in Canyon de Chelly, a helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon and hiring jet bikes on Lake Mead.

WHERE NEXT?

I fancy a safari in South Africa. Watching animals in the wild must be amazing.

WHAT DO YOU AVOID ON HOLIDAY?

Too much travelling around. Because I’m on the go constantly, I like to relax. For most of our holidays, we return to Lake Como and visit friends.

Paul says he likes to spend most of his holidays on Lake Como, pictured, visiting friends

EVER HAD A BAD FLIGHT?

Yes, while flying to Cornwall from London to attend a gig. I was on a tiny prop plane in a thunderstorm. It was so frightening.

STRANGEST THING FOR DINNER?

A duck’s tongue in Taiwan. It looked like it had been pulled out with forceps.

DO PEOPLE EXPECT YOU TO SING?

Often. People think I can burst into song any time of the day, it’s crazy. Someone at an airport in Germany asked me to sing Wherever I Lay My Hat. It’s strange, they wouldn’t ask people in other professions to perform on the spot.
