Britain’s top foodie counties have been revealed – and it’s North Yorkshire that reigns supreme for delicious dining.

That’s according to the newly launched AA Restaurant Guide 2023, which lists 68 top-quality restaurants in North Yorkshire, more than any other county.

The runner-up spot goes to Devon, with 59 high-end dining spots listed, and in third place it’s Cumbria, which is represented in the guide by 57 restaurants.

Cornwall comes fourth (42), followed by Gloucestershire and Norfolk (joint fifth, 38), Hampshire (sixth, 36), Suffolk (seventh, 32), Kent (eighth, 31) and Oxfordshire (ninth, 30).

In Scotland, Edinburgh leads the way with 29 restaurants featured in the guide, followed by The Highlands (27) and Perth & Kinross (20).

Meanwhile, Conwy is the Welsh county with the highest number of restaurants (11), followed by Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire with nine each.

County Antrim is the foodie capital of Northern Ireland outside of Belfast, says the AA, with both destinations having six restaurants in the guide, which lists over 1,400 restaurants in total and is now in its 29th edition.

The area with the most listings overall is, unsurprisingly, London – which has a whopping 172 entries.

The AA awards between one and five ‘Rosettes’ to restaurants deemed good enough to be name-checked in the guide, with one Rosette given to restaurants’ achieving standards that stand out in their local area’ and five to restaurants ‘where the cooking compares to the best in the world’.

Third-place Cumbria is represented in the guide by 57 restaurants. Above is the county’s three-AA-Rosette Old Stamp House Restaurant in Ambleside

In Scotland, Edinburgh leads the way with 29 restaurants featured in the guide. Pictured above is the city’s Timberyard restaurant, which has three AA Rosettes

Restaurants in the guide with five Rosettes include Lympstone Manor Hotel in Exmouth, Devon; Core by Clare Smyth in London; Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, and Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton, Oxfordshire.

The four-Rosette restaurant list includes Allium at Askham Hall, Cumbria; Adam Reid at The French, Manchester; The Angel at Hetton, North Yorkshire; and House of Tides in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Restaurants awarded three AA Rosettes include The Old Stamp House in Ambleside, Cumbria; The Seafood Restaurant, Padstow, Cornwall; Buckland Manor, Buckland, Gloucestershire; and Benedicts, Norwich.

The guide also marks out restaurants with ‘notable wine lists’ and this year includes over 150 new entries, including No. Fifty Cheyne (London, SW3); The Jackdaw (Conwy); Grace & Savour (Solihull, West Midlands); The Flitch of Bacon (Little Dunmow, Essex); The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant (Crieff, Perth & Kinross) and Haar (St Andrews, Fife).

Simon Numphud, Managing Director of AA Media, said: ‘We are delighted to publish the leading guide to the UK’s top dining destinations, with 150 new establishments added to The Restaurant Guide 2023. From Northern Stars to the Heart of England, Scotland to the capital, the restaurants in this year’s guide demonstrate the high quality of culinary experiences across the country, offering delicious food and service of the highest standard.’
