The great Christmas sandwich taste test! FEMAIL tries 45 sarnies and wraps from supermarkets and cafes – and a VERY surprising one comes out on top

Asda Festive Feast

£3.00

Rating:

I really liked it there was the right amount of everything, the turkey wasn’t dry and there was the perfect amount of cranberry chutney.

I was slightly apprehensive about the gravy mayonnaise but it was actually really nice and there wasn’t too much mayo!

Would definitely buy again. – Kristen Murray

Kristen said the Festive Feast had the perfect amount of chutney

Tesco Yule Hog Wrap

£2.85

Rating:

The wrap was packed with pulled pork, allowing the rich meaty flavour to shine. The savoury taste was nicely balanced with sage and onion stuffing and a hint of sweet cider sauce that came through at the end. All in all, a deliciously balanced sandwich with a generous portion of meat. – Tim Boler

Tim thought Tesco’s popular wrap was tasty and well balanced

M&S Jingle Brie-LT

 £4.50

Rating:

I must admit I was slightly alarmed at the price of this. £4.50 for a supermarket sandwich seems a bit much, but I would happily pay for this anytime.

The Jingle Brie-LT is unequivocally a five-star star of Christmas. The buttery brioche perfectly complements the creamy brie and crispy bacon filling, elevating each bite to a realm of unparalleled satisfaction. The crispy bacon adds a delightful crunch.

The tomato and cranberry chutney, a stroke of genius, introduces a burst of sweet and tangy notes, perfectly encapsulating the festive spirit. – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Femail’s Bridie Peasrson-Jones said the Jingle Brie- LT was  ‘unequivocally a five-star star of Christm’

Starbucks Festive Feast Panini

£5.30

Rating:

Christmas in every bite. This is everything you want in, well seasoned chicken, perfectly crisp bacon with perfect umami caramelised onion stuffing that isn’t too overpowering, plus a perfect tanginess with the cranberry sauce.

It would get even the grumpiest of grinches in the festive spirit – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie said Starbuck’s Festive Panni would even cheer up the Grinch

Starbuck’s Brie & Cranberry Focaccia

£5.30

Rating:

Creamy brie, crispy rosemary atop olive oil focaccia. A great veggie sandwich with the perfect dance of flavours.

The peppery spinach is the perfect complement to the tartness of the cranberry. I would eat this every day. Only criticism? For £5.30 I’d want more filling please! – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie said she’d eat this sandwich everyday if she could thanks to the peppery combo and tangy chutney

M&S Turkey Feast

£3.90

Rating:

The thick slices of turkey are a delight in this sandwich, clearly made with high quality ingredients and a succulent and hearty foundation for the sandwich.

The crispy bacon adds a wonderful crunch, enhancing the overall texture and flavour profile.

‘The bread is much thicker than other sarnies, meaning it held together perfectly. – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie praised the high quality ingredients of M&S’s festive offering

M&S Ho Ho Pest-Ho

£3.65

Rating:

A solid four stars, thanks to its deliciously innovative take on festive flavors.

Earthy and tasty roasted butternut squash, steals the spotlight while the rocket pesto brings a perfectly peppery kick, adding a layer of complexity to each bite.

The unexpected but delightful twist comes from the tahini mayo.

However, it loses a point for straying into a more summery vibe rather than delivering the anticipated Christmas essence.  – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie thought the M&S vegan sandwich was delicious, but not Christmassy

Aldi Vegan Festive Feast

£1.99

Rating:

This sandwich is tasty and the flavours are nice – but it is despairingly dry.

There is not nearly enough onion mayonnaise or any other softener to take away from the intensity of the parsnip fritter.

However the taste is lovely and feels festive without being predictable or cliche. – Elmira Tanatarova

Elmira thought the Aldi Vegan Festive Feast was ‘lovely and festive’

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference  Christmas Cracker Club

£4.50

Rating:

Join the club? I would again.

Even a black-hearted scrooge like myself can get into the festive spirit, given the right conditions.

A sandwich which is just sweet enough without being sickly, alongside traditional cuts of meat all sturdily packed together between three (yes, three) high-quality slices of bread goes just a little way towards getting me feeling jolly. It would be good, even if it wasn’t Christmas.  – Henry Martin

Pret A Manager Brie, Pistachio & Cranberry Baguette

£4.75

Rating:

Pret’s daring move to incorporate pistachios into the timeless Christmas favourite, the brie and cranberry baguette, deserves praise.

It has a delightful texture, the brie baguette made me think I was in Paris due to the  soft and chewy goodness.

However, the cranberry presence was lacking, seemingly vanishing halfway through the baguette.

Bridie said this baguette transported her to Paris

Pret’s Christmas Lunch Baguette

£4.75

Rating:

I know this is very popular, but the stuffing is too porky and masked all the other taste.

You can tell this is well made though, and the crispy onions are a saving grace.

Bridie thought the porky stuffing over powered this baguette

Aldi Specially Selected Seafood Cocktail Bloomer

£2.69

Rating:

I’m not sure what’s Christmassy about this. But this is great for a fan of seafood. King prawns, surimi, and cold-water prawns with a rich and creamy Marie Rose cocktail sauce, makes this seem much more upmarket than it’s £2.69 price tag – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie thought this sandwich was much better quality than it’s £2.69 tag would make you think

Tesco Plant Chef Spiced Butternut Squash and Chestnut

£2.85

Rating:

This wrap was delicious. I initially feared that it might be a bit bland, but it was the complete opposite. The spiced flavours worked really well and gave it a curried taste.

To get five stars, I would’ve liked a little bit more salad to improve the texture. – Alanah Kholsa

Alanah praised the spicy flavours of this wrap

Boots Turkey Lunch

£3.25

Rating:

It’s hard to go wrong when you combine, turkey, stuffing, bacon and cranberry sauce, and this sandwich nailed the brief.

It had the right ratio of ingredients, to let every element enjoy its time in the spotlight. The biggest shock was the turkey – a meat that is famous for its dryness, I was actually pleasantly surprised that it was sufficiently moist.

If I had one criticism it would be that the stuffing wasn’t the most flavoursome compared to others I’ve tried, which does let the sarnie down a tad – Millie Veitch

Millie said this sandwich was surprisingly moist

Costa Turkey Feast Sandwich

£3.80

Rating:

This was a delicious festive sandwich. With turkey, maple bacon, cranberry sauce and pork, sage and onion stuffing, it had all the staple aspects you’d want in a Christmas sandwich.

It had a very generous amount of filling, was packed with flavour and wasn’t dry at all. The cranberry sauce could be a bit overpowering in some bites, but otherwise a great festive lunch option – I would have it again! – Kate Dennett

Kate said Costa’s turkey sandwich is something she would ‘have again’

Costa Pigs in Blankets Toastie

£5.55

Rating:

In my opinion, you can’t beat a toastie for lunch on a cold winter day – the only thing that can make it better is adding a festive touch. Thankfully, Costa has it covered with this absolute winner of a toastie.

Inside the ‘Pigs and Blankets Toastie’ was the classic bacon-wrapped pork sausage along with caramelised onion chutney in garlic, onion and sage crumbed cheese-topped bread.

Without too much going on, simplicity is key and the combination of flavours was delicious.

Pleasantly surprised with how nice this was, I would definitely reach for this toastie again.

However, the only thing I would say is that it could do with a little more cheese inside as it was slightly lacking in this department. – Ffion Haf

Ffion said: ‘simplicity is key and the combination of flavours was delicious’

Asda Prawn Cocktail Sandwich

Rating:

The tasty bread is soft and tender to the touch, as though it were freshly baked this morning.

The prawns are also packed with seasoned flavour, while soft enough that they almost melt in your mouth.  – Maria Okanrende

 Sainsbury’s Hot Smoked Salmon Sandwich

£4.25

Rating:

I really enjoyed the soft rye bread and the capers which added a nice salty tang to the sandwich. It had a good amount of smoked salmon and the spinach and dill gave some freshness.

My only critique is that there was slightly too much creme fraiche which made eating it messier than I would have liked. Overall a very satisfying sandwich that didn’t have any unwanted fishy aftertaste. – Olivia Day

Olivia said this sandwich was delicious but had ‘too much creme fraiche’

Tesco Festive Chicken, Bacon & Stuffing Wrap

Rating:

£2.85

A delightful combination of flavours! The chicken is succulent, the bacon is crispy and stuffing is well-seasoned.

The three flavours blend a gorgeous balance of textures. Had me feeling festive in just one bite – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Costa’s Honey Roast Ham with Wensleydale Cranberry Sourdough Ciabatta

£4.95

Rating:

For me, this is the definition of a perfect festive lunch that isn’t just your basic leftover turkey sandwich.

Surprisingly, the one slice of thick, juicy honey ham was more than enough. It was perfectly balanced out by the Wensleydale crumb.

It truly felt like you were at the dinner table tucking into your Boxing Day cheese board and leftover meats.

My only complaint is that the ciabatta is a little dry. I think swapping out the cranberries in the bread for a cranberry sauce would have made this toastie the perfect treat. – Chloe Louise

Waitrose Pigs in Blankets

£4.000

Rating:

Overall the sandwich was one of the nicer Christmas sandwiches I’ve had.

The pigs under blankets were really tasty and the cream cheese and cranberry kept it moist and sweet.

My only critique was that the bread was a bit bland. – Jack Linstead

Waitrose Turkey, Stuffing and Bacon

£4.75

Rating:

The sandwich had a generous amount of filling, which was very satisfying.

The turkey and stuffing matched very well with the cranberry and redcurrant chutney, which helped to keep the sandwich not dry at all.

The bread was not a wow factor, which is a shame as the filling was top notch. – Dan Linstead

Waitrose Ham & Festive Slaw

£4.75

Rating:

Fabulously festive. The ham and slaw were perfectly paired together, with the savoury glace (made with orange and whiskey marmalade chutney) the real showstopper. The perfect medley of sweet and savoury on a gorgeous multiseed bread – Briide Pearson-Jones

Bridie said this sandwich was ‘fabulously festive’

Co-op Handmade Christmas Market Sandwich

£3

Rating:

The dark rye bread was beautifully soft and moist. It contained a deep layered filling of crunchy sauerkraut, offering a welcome contrast to the currywurst-style sausages and cheese base.

The sausages were slightly disappointing as they lacked the meaty flavour I expected and had a bready processed texture. – Tim Boler

Costa Turkey and Trimmings Toastie

Rating:

This turkey toastie contains some of the key elements of a scrumptious traditional Christmas dinner such as maple bacon, béchamel sauce, sage and onion stuffing and cranberry sauce on cheese topped bread.

Upon the first bite, I was hit with a mouthful of succulent Turkey meat along with the fruitiness of the cranberry sauce. My favourite part of the sandwich was the sage and onion stuffing element – which tied the festive-themed sandwich together – and they did not scrimp on the filling.

Whilst there was a lot of maple bacon in my sandwich, I could not taste it over the other overpowering flavours – perhaps it was the weakest link.

I also could not get all the layers of flavour at the same time. One minute it was a mouthful of stuffing, the next, turkey. It would have been good to have them evenly spread out so I could experience them together – Gina Kalsi

Gina said: ‘Whilst there was a lot of maple bacon in my sandwich, I could not taste it over the other overpowering flavours’

Morrisons Brie & Cranberry Sandwich

Rating:

‘Overall it was a very good sandwich. The brie and the cranberry went together perfectly and the spinach added a bit of freshness to what could have been quite a heavy sandwich.

‘My only complaint is that they could have been more generous with the amount of brie that was put in.

‘The M&S version of this sandwich is much more indulgent due to the amount of cheese. But I would be very happy to buy this item again.’ – Amelia Wynne

Amelia thought Morrison’s could be more generous with the amount of brie they put in the sandwich

Morrisons Turkey Lunch Sandwich

£2.85

Rating:

Thick turkey slices and nice cranberry chutney, but the overall flavour lacks distinction.

I couldn’t tell what are smoked bacon, where the onion stuffing was and what exactly the mayo was seasoned with. But still tasty! – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Bridie thought this sandwich ‘lack flavour distinction’

Costa Vegan Turkee Toastie

Rating:

The highlight of the toastie for me was definitely the mushroom stuffing, it added a nice flavour to the mix. However, I think there was just a bit too much going on for me.

I found the texture a bit too soggy with all of the elements, though this could be because I toasted mine at home. I’d say it’s a nice purchase as a one-off treat, but I’d go for something a bit simpler in the future – Alanah Kholsa

Alanah said: ‘ I found the texture a bit too soggy with all of the elements’

Boots Turkey Feast

£3.25

Rating:

The sandwich had a generous amount of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, providing all the classic festive fillings, but the smoked bacon provided a very strong charcoal-like flavour, which I don’t think was best suited to a Christmas snack.

It’s a very particular taste that I don’t think would be universally liked, and I personally would have preferred it without the bacon. It was otherwise a well-packed festive sandwich, but the smoked bacon let it down for me. I don’t think this will be one for everyone this Christmas. – Kate Dennett
