The UK’s cheapest family attractions are in a lesser-visited English town – here’s where to go for cheap days out

Parents across the UK often dread the high costs of six-week summer holidays – but the most affordable family days out happen to be in some of the most unexpected places.

Instead of dropping a fortune on major city or coastal attractions, families can discover unique, cost-effective experiences by exploring England’s smaller regional towns.

To help, ticket booking service Split My Fare has ranked 71 UK cities on attraction prices, public transport, parking and meal costs to reveal the ultimate budget-friendly destinations for a family of four.

A cathedral city on the Welsh border offers the UK’s most affordable family days out, with local activities averaging just £17.67 – the lowest average price of any city in the country.

Hereford (pictured) has been crowned the most affordable UK destination for attractions, where local activities average just £17.67

As England’s cider capital, Hereford is home to an array of cider bars, family-run cider farms and the Museum of Cider (pictured)

In Hereford, which lies along the River Wye in Herefordshire, attraction costs were almost seven times lower than London’s £117.60 average.

Families can save significantly on travel costs before the day even begins, with parking a third of what is charged in London, at £8.13 against £31.33.

In addition, a family of four travelling from London Paddington to Hereford can cut their return rail fare from £189.45 down to £139.94 by split-ticketing the same journey, which offers a 26 per cent saving of £49.51.

Visitors can stroll along the River Wye, which offers scenic views close to the train station and cathedral.

Guests stepping inside the cathedral can admire the famous 13th-century Mappa Mundi, and get an up-close look at an impressive collection of rare chained books.

As England’s cider capital, Hereford is celebrated for its fantastic cider bars, the Old Market, Museum of Cider, and weekly farmers’ market, where visitors can stock up on Gasping Goose, an organic medium cider produced at local family-run farm, Newton Court.

The city boasts plenty of family-friendly activities, including the inflatable world of Flip Out Hereford, ten-pin bowling at Discobowl, paddleboard excursions along the River Wye, or woodland adventure fun at Queenswood Country Park.

A 30-minute drive or one-hour bus journey to nearby Ross-on-Wye brings families to Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, home to 40 different species of exotic butterflies, a sprawling traditional hedge maze, and a mini-golf course.

For entry to the Butterfly Zoo, adult tickets cost £6.75, while children aged between 5 and 15 years pay just £4.75. Children aged four and under go free.

Pete Walls, co-founder of Split My Fare, said: ‘Most people planning a family break default to the obvious places, like London, Bath, York, or Edinburgh. But taking the train opens families up to cities many people genuinely overlook.

‘Hereford has a cathedral that rivals any in the country, the Mappa Mundi, one of the world’s great medieval treasures, and an independent food scene that punches well above its size.

Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo is located 30 minutes from Hereford in Ross-on-Wye, where adult tickets cost just £7 and children can enter for less than £5

Gloucester – most known for its stunning cathedral (pictured), which served as a filming location in the Harry Potter films – has taken the top spot for all-round value for family days out

‘Plus, the average attraction costs for a family of four are the same as just 1 London cinema ticket.’

The study reveals a clear trend: the most affordable family day trips are typically in smaller, hidden-gem cities, all reachable by train from major hubs in under three hours.

Lancaster took second place among the most affordable family attractions at £19.50.

Following closely behind were Newry (£22.95), Ely (£27.10), Peterborough (£27.63), and Bradford (£28.00).

Rounding out the affordable list were Chichester at £29.60, Lincoln at £29.80, Gloucester at £30.26, and Wrexham at £31.50.

Gloucester, meanwhile, offered the best overall value for family days out, combining an average attraction cost of £30.26 and parking at £7.57.

The city is best-known for its iconic annual cheese-rolling event and spectacular cathedral, which famously served as a filming location for Hogwarts scenes in the Harry Potter franchise.

At only £8 a day, Wolverhampton boasts the nation’s cheapest daily transport and sits just 90 minutes from Euston. Runner-up Coventry also provides excellent value following its City of Culture year.

Travel savings quickly add up when families choose to ‘split-save’.

While a sample family-of-four return ticket from Manchester Piccadilly to Gloucester costs £322.50, the price plummets to £205.71 simply by splitting the journey into connecting tickets – enough to cover the next family day out.

At the other end of the scale, London has been crowned the most expensive for family attractions, with average costs sitting at £117.60, followed by Preston (£109.00), Chester (£106.41), Plymouth (£103.27) and Durham (£94.65).

Rounding out the top ten is Doncaster (£92.00), Leicester (£84.00), Worcester (£83.60), Milton Keynes (£81.29), and Sheffield (£74.77).
