How To Get Jeepney
Guide of getting around the Philippines by means of Jeepney
1. Know the address of the place you are going to.
Make sure you have the correct address of the place you will visit.
2. Make sure to get on the right Jeepney
Important to know which jeepney to take depending on where you are going. How? Before you leave the place where you where in, like hotel you can ask some staff there. Or if you are already lost on your way, the best to ask is a policeman. If there is no policeman, security guard or people or staff or owner of the convenient store you see. My mother said, I still remember, she said when I was a kid, when you were lost on your way, look for a policeman for help or ask.
Some destinations you have to go to the terminal which is mostly found in the city. Take jeepney to terminal then look for the jeepney to bring you to your destination. Most of the terminals have barkers. They announced the places of destination, observe or ask people around the terminal where is the jeepney parking going to that place.
When you are in the Jeepney and you are not aware of your place, seat on the front beside the driver and ask the driver can you drop me to this place, tell him where.
3. Terminal to Terminal
This is according to our experience going to Municipal Office of Sta Rosa, Laguna to get visa. So, from our place , take jeepney to San Pablo City (P20.00). Walk 5 minutes to Jeepney terminal going to Calamba. San Pablo to Calamba (P70@ if I remember it right). From Calamba (SM Mall) take coach to Sta. Rosa (P58.00). Drop to Malibay and then take another jeepney (P13.00) minimum fare to the town proper where is Municipal Office of Sta. Rosa where the nearest Department of Foreign Affair is located.
Another option take van from San Pablo City to Sta. Rosa terminal and then take jeepney to town proper. We discovered the van while we were looking around San Pablo town and we paid P100.00 each. One hour travel to terminal of Sta. Rosa.
But if the busses are available to the place of destination then you can take bus. We usually take bus for convenience when it is possible. We just pay an extra but worth it because more comfortable seat and with AC. This is according our experience.
4. How to pay the Jeepney driver?
When you seat away from the driver, payments are made by passing money along the passengers. Say in tagalog words BA-YAD PO (my pay) or MA-KI-SUYO PO (Please) and the person next to you will get your money by passing to one another until it reaches the driver. If you have change, the driver will pass the money to the passenger until it reaches you and say thank you or SA-LA-MAT PO in Tagalog.
Some jeepney drivers sometimes accompanied by someone in-charge of your payment.
5. How to stop jeepney
When you want to stop the jeepney, say PA-RA PO (stop in English). Note: the word PO at the end of the word or sentence is Pilipino way of respect speaking to elders or to anyone.
6. Jeepney Minimum fare
The minimum fare in jeepney is 13 pesos. I think this is 4 km. if you are going to another town just ask the driver how much is the fee. The driver has list of how much is the fare. The government provided them the list. They memorized the amount so when you ask, they know already how much.
Additional Information
Commuter Tips:
It is always best to pay the exact amount because the driver is responsible for computing how much you are going to pay if you have companies and your change unless he is accompanied by someone who is in-charge to that.
