Bulle (pronounced [byl]; Bulo Listen in Friborg dialect is a Swiss locality and municipality in the canton of Friborg, capital of the district of Gruyère. It is the second most populous city in the canton after Friborg.

The agglomeration of Bulle was incorporated in 2007 and includes the municipalities of Bulle, Morlon, Le Pâquier-Montbarry, Riaz, and Vuadens, with a total of around 30,000 inhabitants.

In 2004, Bulle was ranked 1st among French-speaking towns where life is good, according to a study by IDHEAP and L’Hebdo. It even comes third nationally behind Zug and Zurich. In terms of dynamism, Bulle is also ranked in a good position among French-speaking towns according to a study carried out by the magazine Bilan dated February 2010. It comes in 4th position after Nyon, Montreux and Écublens in terms of socio-economic conditions, creations jobs in construction and the cost of housing and, finally, income and social stability

There are some traces of human settlement dating from the Hallstatt period, however little is known about the town’s prehistory. Bulle would have been founded before the ninth century, in the current district of Gruyère. But the city, depending on the prince bishops of Lausanne, was not part of the County of Gruyère. The first writing about the existence of Bulle, dates from the year 855; Bulle then appears under the name of Butulum. Between 1231 and 1239, the city was equipped with ramparts enclosing the two original streets (Grand-Rue and Rue de Bouleyres) and the castle was built a few decades later. The city is then already a market town [7]. In 1536, the city of Bulle passed into the hands of the city of Friborg which created the bailiwick of Bulle with the other possessions of the Bishop of Lausanne in the region, namely Riaz, La Roche and Albeuve.

In 1781, during the Chenaux uprising that left Bulle, Pierre-Nicolas Chenaux (1740–1781) marched with his supporters on Friborg in May to assert social and economic demands. On April 29, 1781, Pierre-Nicolas Chenaux led his supporters gathered in Bulle at the Auberge de l’Epée crownonnée (now the Hôtel du Cheval Blanc) and planned an uprising and planned to take Friborg [8].

During the entire period of the Ancien Régime, the city remained confined to its ramparts, with the exception of the suburb of Porte d’En-Haut (now Place des Alpes).
