Because you can often find 50 per cent discounts. ‘There are significant savings at a number of British hotels on Sundays, often with added extras thrown in,’ says Richard Fraiman of the Good Hotel Guide, which lists properties with discounts at goodhotelguide.com. ‘You may get a complimentary lunch or dinner, or a bottle of champagne, and still pay much less.’

Rooms with a view (of Chatsworth) in the peaks
Enjoy the Peak District without peak prices when you check in at The Cavendish in Baslow on a Sunday stayover. The hotel is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, all but one of the 28 stylish bedrooms look over the grounds of their Chatsworth estate, and you can walk to the house by footpath.

One of the hotels offering the best added extras among Good Hotel Guide members is the historic Cringletie House in the Scottish borders. It runs Gourmet Sunday packages that include champagne and canapes followed by a seven-course tasting menu with matching wines. The price, which includes a full Scottish breakfast the next day, is £369 for two people, compared with a Saturday rate starting at £400 which includes only a three-course meal, with no drinks (cringletie.com).
Work up an appetite for the dinner by following the nature trail. Afterwards, settle into a leather sofa fireside with a dram or two before retiring to one of 13 comfortable bedrooms.
