US expat says roundabouts and no guns in retail stores would put Americans in a coma

A US woman has listed six odd and amazing things about Australia including ‘the fact you can’t just go into Walmart and buy a gun’.

Hannah Shuman who lives in Sydney said the comparisons between the two would put her fellow Americans ‘into a coma’ in a social media video that went viral.

She listed roundabouts, speed cameras, air conditioning, lack of ranch dressing and access to guns as huge differences that floored her.

The bubbly video post presented with a Sydney Harbour background was captioned: ‘Things in Australia that would send Americans into a coma.’

She kicked it off with a ‘I had to, y’all’ intro, before listing one comparison at the top of her list.

‘The fact you can’t just go into Walmart and buy a gun, or really anywhere,’ the TikTokker said.

Ms Shuman added to the list there were ‘so many’ roundabouts in Australia ‘that it’s crazy’

‘There is not a total ban on guns in Australia so you can get one – but it’s so much harder than in America.’

Ms Shuman added to the list there were ‘so many’ roundabouts in Australia ‘that it’s crazy’.

She also couldn’t believe Australia had heaps of speed cameras monitoring drivers as opposed to ‘cops who sit on the side of the road’ back in the US.

‘They just have cameras up everywhere [in Australia] that catch you while you’re speeding and they send you a ticket automatically,’ Ms Shuman said.

The Florida native went on to name two frustrating things about the land down under compared to what she is used to.

She was gobsmacked ‘central air’ was not common in Australia, adding having no air-con was ‘unheard of’ where she is from.

‘You are lucky if you have central air and it’s probably in a newer build – but most places just have wall units or don’t have air conditioning at all,’ she said.

‘You cannot survive in Florida without air-conditioning.’

The keen traveller said lack of ranch dressing was also an issue for her as she has been only be able to find a ‘watered-down version’ of the real thing in Australia.

‘It is not ranch dressing,’ Ms Shuman insisted.

But she offered high praise for the country’s ‘unbelievable’ Medicare system, where ‘you don’t end up with a $1,000 bill in the mail’.

The post drew a slew of online commenters who said ‘tough’ Aussies don’t need air conditioning – all they need to do is ‘open the windows’.

Another corrected her use of vocabulary in Australia.

‘We don’t call it “central air”, that just means it’s an air-con in the middle of the house somewhere. We call it ‘ducted air conditioning’.

Ms Shuman then agreed that’s what she meant, claiming ‘I never see it!’

‘That’s why Australia is one of the best countries to live in,’ an online user said after the TikTokker’s rave about Medicare

But others said the differences between the two countries were not that far apart.

‘Trust me we still have cops sit on the side of the road as well as the speed cameras.’

‘We also have cameras at most lights now that will catch you out if you don’t have a seat belt on or on your phone,’ another added.

Some disagreed about the air-conditioning claiming it was everywhere down under while others said having no guns at the ready was a blessing.

‘Feels good being able to go to school where the only fear is [that] you have a test,’ a commenter said.

‘That’s why Australia is one of the best countries to live in,’ another said after the TikTokker’s rave about Medicare.
