Want to see Southern California’s super bloom? Visitors face arrest

A canyon known for its rich poppy fields will be closed to the public to prevent a repeat of the chaotic scenario that played out during the last “super bloom” in 2019.

Earlier this week, Lake Elsinore Mayor Natasha Johnson was joined by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and others to announce that Lake Elsinore’s Walker Canyon trailhead and wildflower fields along it will be closed to all visitors this spring. 

The city will implement a zero tolerance, “keep out” policy.

“Our community’s safety is our main focus,” Johnson said during a news briefing adjacent to the Walker Canyon Trailhead.

‘The flowers were beautiful, but the scene was a nightmare’

Lake Elsinore usually welcomes visitors to the community about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles, the mayor said, but that cost became too high for residents in 2019. The super bloom occurred in the wake of major winter rainfall and became an “international phenomenon,” drawing “Disneyland-size crowds” which caused numerous problems on trails and roads, Johnson said. 

Mostly green and in the incipient stage, this year’s bloom is expected to look less vibrant.
