✅ Old town with Slavic origins
The German capital is one of the largest cities in the European Union. Berlin’s history dates back to the 13th century. Before that, there was a Slavic stronghold called Kopanica, today it is one of the districts called Köpenick. Linguists also derive the name Berlin from the Old Slavic word “brl”, meaning swamp and marsh.
Berlin’s wartime and post-war history has made it a remarkably open and friendly city today. People from all over the world live and work here, and there are plenty of tourists and partygoers. There is something for everyone in Berlin.
✅ Where heritage meets modernity
Start your sightseeing tour of Berlin from its centre. It is in the Mitte district that you will find the most interesting places. Here you’ll find both valuable monuments and modern buildings.
👉 To start with, see what Berlin looks like from above. So you have to climb the famous 368 m high TV tower. At 203 m there is an observation deck and a mobile restaurant. The views you get from here are simply fabulous.
👉 Right next to the tower is Alexanderplatz. It’s a very busy place frequented by Berliners and tourists alike, which abounds with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants and has great accessibility (the square is a major transport hub).
👉 Also look out for the Urania Weltzeituhr, a clock showing the time in 24 time zones. Its interesting design is crowned by the Solar System.
✅ Museum Island – a paradise for fans of antiquity
From Alexanderplatz you can walk to Museum Island. Here you will find five museums, the most famous of which are the Pergamonmuseum and the New Museum with its magnificent collections of ancient art. Here you will see the Pergamon Altar, the Babylonian Ishtar Gate, marvellous Greek sculptures or extraordinary artefacts from Egypt with the bust of Queen Nefertiti at the forefront.
👉 On your way to the museums, also see the Gothic St. Mary’s Church and the magnificent Baroque Berlin Cathedral. The latter is considered one of the city’s most beautiful buildings.
✅ Brandenburg Gate and shadows of the past
From the museums, a stroll down the main historic street Unter den Linden will lead you to the city’s symbol, the Brandenburg Gate. At the time when the city was divided into two spheres of influence, no one passed through it. It stood in no man’s land. The impressive building is crowned by a Roman quadriga, which is driven by Victoria (Gr. Nike).
👉 Near the Gate are reminders of the occupation division of the city. These include the remains of the famous Berlin Wall. One part of it has been turned into the East Site Gallery art gallery. See what the most famous Checkpoint Charli border crossing looked like. When you’re in nearby Potsdamer Platz, imagine this busy place without a single person. This is what the square looked like just a few decades ago, as it lay in a no-man’s-land.
👉 Be sure to also see the Topography of Terror Museum, located in the former Gestapo headquarters, and the Holocaust Memorial.
👉 Not far from the Gate are also Germany’s most important buildings. These include the Reichstag, which houses the German parliament with its impressive glass dome, and the state-of-the-art headquarters of the German Chancellor.
✅ Berlin’s parks
Berlin is also an exceptionally green city. The magnificent parks, headed by the Tiergarten, are places that are conducive to relaxation. You’ll not only find wonderful vegetation in them, but also, for example, the Victory Column with its viewing terrace.
