As Disney fans flock to cinemas today to see the new Moana film, many may find themselves dreaming of escaping to the beautiful island of Motunui.
While Moana’s tropical home may be fictional, the UK has its own slice of paradise that feels almost as magical.
Kynance Cove in Cornwall has been dubbed ‘Britain’s answer to Moana’s Motunui’ by Sykes Cottages – and it’s easy to see why.
Tucked away on the western side of the Lizard Peninsula, this tidal beach boasts pristine white sand, turquoise waters, dramatic rock stacks and lush green surroundings. Its otherworldly scenery can make visitors forget they are still in the UK.
The National Trust has described Kynance Cove as “one of the world’s most spectacular beaches”, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience a taste of Moana’s island paradise.
At low tide, hidden caves and small islands emerge, offering plenty to explore — although visitors should keep an eye on the water to avoid being cut off by the incoming tide.

Kynance Cove has appeared in a number of high-profile TV series including Poldark, starring Aidan Turner, and actor Matt Smith, playing Prince Daemon Targaryen, also shot scenes for House Of The Dragon here in 2021.
Visitors with dogs are allowed on the beach except for during the seasonal ban between July 1 and August 31, 10am to 6pm.
A popular trail, the Lizard coastal walk, begins at Kynance Cove and takes three hours to complete.
It takes hikers on a seven-hour trek around the entire Lizard Peninsula, which is the most southerly tip of mainland Britain.
Walkers will head along a cliff path overlooking Pentreath beach, pass by Polpeor Cove, continue on to Lizard Lighthouse and then Lions Den. Eventually the trail leads back to Kynance Cove.
The beach can be accessed by steps, though they are steep in places.
Meanwhile, parking options for the beach are small and National Trust warns, ‘Extremely busy with limited parking throughout July, August and September.’

For those looking to stay in the area and make a holiday out of their visit, it’s possible to find a charming coastal cottage for as little as £68.43 per night.
Sykes Cottages offers a seven-night stay at Rocket Cart House in Lizard from £479.
The characterful abode dates back to 1869 and was previously used to store lifeboat equipment.
Nowadays, it’s a cosy retreat that sleeps two, featuring a wood-burning stove and a private courtyard.
Last month, the world’s 100 best beaches were named and two UK spots made the list.
Barafundle Bay in Pembrokeshire, Wales, was celebrated for its remote and dramatic landscapes. This secluded National Trust cove is accessible only by a clifftop walk through a medieval archway.
Often described as having ‘views reminiscent of the Caribbean’, it has a beautiful green backdrop, turquoise waters and a golden sandy shore that mirrors what you might find on a tropical island.

Elsewhere, Fistral Beach in Cornwall returned to the list as a ‘social and cultural hotspot.’
It was recognised for its vibrant culture, major competitions and buzzing atmosphere that makes it the ultimate place to socialise.
Renowned as a great spot for surfing, the sandy beach boasts a backdrop of dunes and cliffs.
