World’s oldest bird ‘Wisdom’ lays egg at the grand age of 74 – and even outlives the biologist who first banded her in 1956

The world’s oldest bird has laid an egg at the age of 74.

Wisdom, a Laysan albatross that nests in Hawaii, has outlived many male mates, as well as the biologist who first banded her in 1956.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced the surprise egg delivery on X, formerly Twitter, writing: ‘Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg.’

Jon Plissner, supervisory wildlife biologist, called the egg ‘a special joy’ and said officials were ‘optimistic’ it will hatch.

Like other albatrosses, Wisdom returns to the same spot each year to lay.
