The boat that floats ABOVE the water: Yacht builders unveil concept vessel they claim will use ‘wings’ to travel above the waves

A new, 70-foot ‘hyperboat concept’ claims to ‘fly’ above the water and has retractable wings and ‘spaceship-like interiors’. The Persico F70, a vessel that designers say will float above the waves with only a small crew, is being developed by Italian yacht builders Persico Marine in collaboration with Carkeek Design Partners and Pininfarina Nautical.
Designers of the carbon composite crafted yacht boast it as having a ‘sleek, aerodynamic silhouette that’s conducive to breakneck cruising’. They also say that while most foiling yachts are ‘designed purely for speed’, Persico F70 ‘combines high performance with luxury interiors’, meaning it can be used for both racing and leisurely daysailing.
Persico Marine claims the yacht, which was first announced this March, ‘outperforms 100-footers and can “fly” at just 10 knots’ but gave no exact speed figures.
As well as the retractable wings, it also promises ‘elevators on the rudder blade that together allow it to fly across the water with minimal drag’.
Marcello Persico, president of Persico Marine, said: ‘Integrating full-foiling regatta performance, excellence in design and daysailer features is a fascinating challenge, which we have shared with Carkeek Design Partners and Pininfarina.’
The yacht’s futuristic-looking interior space (pictured) is adorned by a series of ‘structural rings’ that Pininfarina’s chief yacht designer Daniele Mazzon says emphasize the length and width of the boat.
Persico also said: ‘Creating a great team is the best lead-in to the market for a boat capable of making history, as the Persico F70 project is proposing to do.’ Pictured is the interior of the concept yacht.
‘A craft of this type requires a design of the highest level, great technology and construction expertise, and the best designers: we have built a solid partnership to attain this ambitious goal,’ Persico added.
