A golfing odyssey on hallowed greens… and a soak in the ultimate spa: Inside the legendary Celtic Manor resort for a great couples’ weekend escape
The wind whipped up and swirled around us as we stood and surveyed the dramatic landscape.
Green valleys glistened in the early morning light.
In the distance the Welsh flag flew proudly in front of the enormous hotel.
We cracked our tee shots and laughed as we meandered down the pristine fairways, basking in the freedom of a few precious child-free hours.
We had picked the Celtic Manor golf resort as our destination for a couples’ weekend: two golfers on the course and two wives in the spa – with the kids left firmly behind to cause chaos with the grandparents.

The resort and championship golf course famously played host to Europe’s 2010 Ryder Cup heroics in which they overcame a box office American team.
That victory left an indelible mark on one of sport’s greatest competitions and has been invaluable to the Welsh tourism industry ever since.
Thirteen years on, golfers still flock in their droves to create their own moments of magic on the hallowed greens.
The resort boasts three courses: the 2010 course – for big boys and girls – as well as the Montgomerie and the Roman Road courses.
They all possess something different and offer a stern challenge.
With an open course in front of us we scampered round, crowing over the odd great shot and cursing the missed putts that fell victim to the electric greens.
It would have been rude not to visit The Grill bar and restaurant, which overlooks the 18th green of the Roman Road course, for a few much needed pints and to toast an incredible golfing odyssey.

Meanwhile in spa-land the girls were relaxing in the swimming pool and hot tub before being treated to a deep tissue massage at Wales’ ultimate pampering palace.
The Forum Spa offers a never-ending range of treatments for mind, body and soul and there is also a salon and exclusive health club.
At night we dined at the fantastic Pad restaurant – offering modern Asian cuisine.
The chilli braised octopus bao buns and deep fried soft shell crab cakes were to die for.
The Korean marinated beef rump steak and Sri Lankan curry are thoroughly recommended – especially when washed down with bottomless glasses of crisp white wine.
For a nightcap we headed to Merlins Bar for a cocktail.
After retiring to our rooms I stood out on the enormous balcony overlooking the majestic golf course.
Laughter echoed in the darkness below me and I chuckled to myself.
It had truly been a day to remember.
