These are royally good rentals.

Here we present a regal array of castles that are available to rent on Airbnb, from a French chateau that’s an hour outside Paris to an imposing stronghold in the wilds of Scotland.

Some properties are ringed by moats and have bedrooms in towering castle turrets, while others sit atop Medieval prison cells and feature mysterious hidden passageways.

Whichever fortress takes your fancy, you’re guaranteed to feel like a king in your very own castle…

Walton Castle, North Somerset, England 

Enjoy wine tastings and Medieval-style dinners at Walton Castle in Somerset 

‘Reign in style in this majestic 17th-century castle in the stunning Somerset countryside.’ So reads the Airbnb listing for Walton Castle, which is perched outside the coastal Victorian town of Clevedon.

Bedrooms are set in the castle’s turrets and inside an octagonal keep. There’s a separate ‘entertainment turret’ that’s ‘ideal for enjoying an aperitif over a game of pool’, as well as two larger turrets for hosting dinners and dances. 

There’s a ‘stunning’ wooden hot tub, a heated indoor pool, a library and a ‘grand’ sitting room with a stone fireplace. Visits can be tailored with activities such as wine tastings, Medieval-style dinners and archery sessions. 

The castle can accommodate 16-plus guests a night, priced at £2,028 in total.  

Scone Palace, Perthshire, Scotland

Stay in the ‘beautifully decorated’ Balvaird Wing in the North West section of Scone Palace. The castle lies a short drive from the city of Perth

With a history dating back more than 1,000 years, Scone Palace is famed as the crowning place of Scottish Kings – it’s here that Robert the Bruce, Macbeth and Charles II were crowned.

Guests can immerse themselves in its legacy with a stay in the ‘beautifully decorated’ Balvaird Wing in the North West section of the Palace, which lies a short drive from the city of Perth.

Special tours of Scone Palace can be organised for Airbnb guests, and they have access to private gardens during their stay.

For an extra pinch of luxury, a cook and maid service can also be arranged on request.

Chateau de Farcheville, Essonne region, around an hour from Paris

You can have this whole 14th-century French chateau to yourself if you so please.

Listed as a ‘Breathtaking French Castle’ on Airbnb, the historic dwelling – which has never been open to the public – boasts 22 bedrooms and 34 bathrooms.

Guests can explore ‘concealed doorways, hidden passages and secret rooms’ and there are even Medieval prison cells waiting to be discovered.

The listing says: ‘The experience of Chateau de Farcheville is one of cheer, fantasy, exhilaration, luxury, exclusivity and privacy.’

Glamorous features include a pool and spa, an accessible rooftop and an underground wine cellar. 

The chateau, which can accommodate 16-plus people, is priced at £16,899 a night in total.

Le Chatelet Thilouze, Centre-Val de Loire region, Central France 

It’s said that ‘time seems to have stopped’ at Le Chatelet Thilouze in Central France 

This entire castle, built by nobleman Rene Gallebrun in 1520 on a medieval motte, is available to rent on Airbnb, listed as ‘Le Chatelet Thilouze’.

‘The Chatelet, restored with all modern conveniences, is ideal for exploring the Loire Valley,’ the listing reveals.

It says that ‘time seems to have stopped’ at the property, which features a moat, arrow slits and bedrooms that are housed in the chateau’s turrets and its adjoining chapel. ‘Swimming and boating in the moat was great,’ wrote Airbnb user Chris.

The rental can accommodate up to nine guests for £48 a night per person.

Kinnaird Castle in Angus, Scotland 

Enjoy a ‘real sense of grandeur’ with a stay at the 15th-century Kinnaird Castle 

This ‘luxurious’ apartment – listed on Airbnb as ‘Macduff Tower’ – is set on the second floor of the 15th-century Kinnaird Castle, home to the Duke of Fife.

The property promises to offer a ‘real sense of grandeur’ with its roll-top baths, the four-poster bed in the main bedroom and the open fire roaring in the ‘elegant’ drawing room.

Of the surrounding estate, which is set near the North Sea coast, the listing reveals: ‘There is a huge variety of wildlife to be seen, including red squirrels, woodpeckers, owls and ospreys, whilst the [nearby] River South Esk is home to salmon and even freshwater pearls.’

The apartment, suitable for up to four guests, is priced at £32 a night per person.

Watermouth Castle, North Devon, England

The listing of this ‘Penn-Curzon Apartment’ on Airbnb reveals: ‘Outside, the castle’s 50-acre estate features wonderful landscaped gardens, with plenty of space for strolling and relaxing, and glorious woodland walks.’ The castle also holds a museum that’s open to the public, filled with curios such as a Victorian kitchen, a large model railway and an arcade of pier slot machines.

The rental, which accommodates up to six people, is priced at £39 a night per person.

Arenfels Castle, southwestern Germany 

Arenfels Castle’s ‘Hunting Room’ rental is said to offer a ‘beautiful view’ of the Rhine river

Dating back to the 13th century, Arenfels Castle is set among vineyards in southwestern Germany, looming over the small city of Bad Honningen on the banks of the Rhine.

The rental, listed as a ‘Hunting Room’, sits in the castle’s west wing and offers a ‘cosy atmosphere’ and a ‘beautiful view’ of the region. The listing recommends spending your days exploring the locale, noting: ‘The forest, the vineyards and the Rhine invite you to walk and hike.’

The ensuite room, which sleeps four, is priced from £40 a night per person.

Yannon Towers, South Devon, England

Described as both a castle and a Victorian folly – a property built for ornamental purposes – the Grade II-listed Yannon Towers can be rented out in its entirety.

According to the listing, the film star Vivien Leigh is believed to have once been a regular guest of the property, which lies in the coastal town of Teignmouth.

A stone spiral staircase leads guests up to the building’s tower, where they’re rewarded with ‘amazing’ views over the Teign Estuary.

The listing reveals: ‘The tower bedroom with its four-poster bed is a real treat to wake up in – especially on a beautiful sunny day when fabulous views from windows on three sides can be enjoyed.’

Downstairs, guests will find an ‘original antique toilet’ and murder mystery-themed games that can be played. 

The house can accommodate up to 10 guests, priced from £24 a night per person.

Caverswall Castle, Staffordshire, England

Listed on Airbnb as ‘Fairytale Castle’, Caverswall Castle is a ‘stunning’ Grade I-listed property built in the early 17th century on the site of a 13th-century castle.

Guests ascend a spiral staircase to stay in one of the castle’s stone turrets, from which they’re treated to ‘picturesque views’ of the moat that circles the property. Alternatively, they can rent out one of the rooms in the main castle. 

During their stay, guests can enjoy a cup of tea amongst the period features of the Wedgwood library, or spend an evening in the castle’s billiards room and dining room.

There are day-trip options aplenty too – Alton Towers theme park and the hiking trails of the Peak District are a short drive away.

Dollarbeg Castle, Clackmannanshire, Scotland

Airbnb user ‘Vincent’ described it as a ‘beautiful apartment in a Disney-like castle’. The rental, which accommodates six people per night, is priced at £64 a night per person.
