A man has sparked a debate about airplane etiquette after revealing a mother yelled at him for watching an R-rated movie on his phone that made her son cry.

The 19-year-old, who kept his identity anonymous, opened up about his awkward in-flight interaction with the angry passenger in a post shared on Reddit’s ‘Am I The A**hole?’ forum.

The teen explained that he was flying to visit his parents and had a few movies downloaded on his smartphone, including Deadpool 2, the 2018 superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

‘I was watching it on my phone with headphones in, when the part where Deadpool gets ripped in half happens, and I can hear a (muffled) scream behind me,’ he wrote.

He explained that he was watching Deadpool 2 (pictured) and was unaware that the boy who was seated behind him was looking at his screen until he burst into tears

‘I take out my headphones and there’s a little kid behind me, crying. He had positioned himself in a way that he could watch my screen and had watched him get torn.’

Not only was the child upset, but the boy’s mother blamed the man for watching the R-rated movie on his personal device.

‘His mom got mad at me and yelled that I shouldn’t be watching that kind of thing, especially in front of children,’ he recalled.

‘But I wasn’t aware anyone was watching me, and that kid would have had to force himself into that weird position to see my phone screen.’

The man later edited his post to explain that it was a six-hour afternoon flight, and the child in question was about six years old or younger.

‘I honestly don’t know if the mom noticed [him watching my screen] and just let it slide until it backfired on her,’ he added.

The Reddit user ended his post by asking if he was in the wrong for watching an R-rated movie on the flight.

‘So, am I an a**hole?’ he asked.

The majority of commenters sided with him, insisting that parents have no right to dictate what other passengers watch during a flight

Many also agreed that the mother was at fault because she should have been keeping an eye on her son.

‘She should’ve watched her own kid. She was happy he was occupied [until] it backfired and decided to shift the blame,’ one person responded.

‘I’m a parent and I hate parents like that. No one else is responsible for what your kid watches,’ another shared.

Some people pointed out that the child wasn’t seated next to him, but others argued that it shouldn’t matter where he was on the flight.

‘I’m seeing a lot of comments saying “well if the kid was next to him…” … if the kid was next to him, behind him, 7 o’clock, it doesn’t matter. Kids and people with kids don’t get to police anything,’ one user stated.

The man explained in the comments that his unpleasant interaction with the mother was swiftly diffused by a flight attendant.

‘I’m not really a confrontational person, so I didn’t tell her much more than the reasoning I gave,’ he wrote. ‘Plus, since there was yelling, a flight attendant came and after a bit of talking, that was the end of the situation.’
