TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY ON TRAVEL, PT 1 (Save + Share this post):

1. Chase the travel deals, not the destination! The vast majority of my travels are based on flight/transportation costs. I’ve flown to Europe from the USA for less than $300 return and within Europe for less than $15 using this strategy and it’s allowed me to discover many new countries and cities! love the Skyscanner “Everywhere” search option— helps you find the cheapest flights from your origin destination.

2. Being flexible with your travel dates will save you a lot of money. Avoid traveling during high season and you can get deep discounts on flights (as well as accommodations when you get there).

3. Travel where your money goes FURTHER— basically, where the exchange rate is favorable. Morocco, Turkey, and Mexico are some my fave destinations for this reason— my US dollars stretch farther than in Europe, which means I can have a “caviar” vacation on a “tuna” budget.

4. Sign up to get alerts for flight deals! Scott’s Cheap Flights and Secret Flying are websites that email subscribers when deals come out.

5. Cut back on food costs by skipping costly restaurants and buying groceries/using markets. If you have booked accommodations with cooking facilities, making a few of your own meals is a great way to save money.

6. Use travel credit cards to collect points and miles. You can use them to travel for free or nearly free! I recently flew to Venice, Italy using my air miles and only paid $6 in fees, and used my points to get a few free nights of hotel in Hong Kong.

These are just a few tips— stay tuned for Part 2! Which tips would you add?..(read more)
