If you stare at Google Flights long enough sometimes it seriously makes more sense to arrive earlier than planned.

For some backstory I had a wedding on Saturday and planned to be in Cancun Friday to Sunday, but wanted to have some more time to explore. Since the flight prices were cheaper to fly out Wednesday I decided to head to Playa del Carmen for two nights and then return to Cancun for the wedding. I could have saved money by staying in Cancun the whole time, having less shuttles or taking the bus but I wanted to check out another town and the shuttles were the most convenient for my timing.

Here’s the break down:
✈️ Flight difference leaving Wednesday vs. Friday ~$250
🛏️ 2 night shared 4 person dorm hostel $50
🚐 Shuttle from airport to Playa del Carmen and Playa del Carmen to Cancun ~$90 (the shuttle from my hostel to the hotel in Cancun I couldn’t find as shared because it wasn’t a common route so I had to book a private)
🌮 Food and drinks: ~$40 max I ate a lot of street food and tacos and it was so delicious
🤿 Cenote and Snorkel excursion: $150. I chose an Airbnb experience to more secluded cenotes and I wanted to prioritize snorkeling with turtles. There were definitely cheaper options but with one full day I wanted to check off a lot.
💃🏼 Watching Carnival: Free
🌊 Swims on the beach: Free
🌃 Walks around town and people watching: Free
💰 Extra money spent for two extra days less the flight difference about $80

If you ask me, money well spent! Sometimes the flight differences are just trying to tell you to go early.
