A traveler has sparked fierce debate after refusing to give up her seat in an airport terminal to a woman in a wheelchair.

The unnamed passenger, believed to be from the US, took to Reddit’s notorious r/AmItheA**hole forum to asked if she was in the wrong during the heated exchange.

The 26-year-old explained how she got to the airport early for her 6am flight – arriving at the gate by 4.30am.

‘When I arrived at the terminal, there were eight different gates but only one was being used so there were quite a few seats. Since I arrived early, I took one on the end by the window.

‘I am traveling solo and like looking out the window. I started listening to my podcast trying to wipe out sleep from my eyes and kept to myself,’ she described of her morning.

The unnamed passenger, believed to be from the US, took to Reddit’s notorious r/AmItheA**hole forum to asked if she was in the wrong during the heated exchange

The original poster emphasized she wasn’t in the disability seating and that there were plenty of other open seats nearby (stock image)

But, about 45 minutes after she got settled in, she noticed a woman and her mom were being ‘wheeled to the gate’ – though she later observed they were able to ‘walk on the plane.’

Then, the pair approached the solo traveler and ‘stopped to ask if I would move.’

‘There were tons of open seats. Probably over 100. I definitely had a nicer, closer seat,’ she admitted.

‘When they asked if I would move, I said no. The younger lady called me rude and scoffed about it. Again, there were tons of opens seats and I had been there for a while. I would have stood or moved if there weren’t any seats.

‘They took a seat a row over and glared at me the entire time until we boarded in the last group. On the plane, the person next to me called me an a**hole for not moving for them. No one else offered to move.’

Over her layover, the traveler began to second-guess her actions and wrote the post, asking whether she was the ‘a**hole’ for not moving.

In an update, she emphasized she was ‘not in the disability seating.’

‘Additionally, some people have invisible disabilities. I was traveling solo, and I think they asked me as every other person sitting at the end of the row appeared to be a part of a group/family.’

By and large, other Reddit users agreed that the woman was ‘not the a**hole’

By and large, other Reddit users agreed that the woman was ‘not the a**hole.’

‘NTA. Unless you were sitting in a seat specifically designated for disabled people, it’s first-come, first-served.

‘Using a wheelchair does not entitle someone to any seat that they choose,’ read a top-voted comment.

‘NTA. They could have used any of the other seats,’ a second agreed.

‘NTA, unless it was specifically marked for disabled, they were obviously using their disability for guilt entitlement,’ chimed in a third.

And, as a fourth put it: ‘NTA Based on the fact that there were plenty of other suitable seats open, and your seat was not specifically marked as for disabled people, it seems incredibly entitled for them to expect you to move.

‘If they were able to adequately justify why they needed that seat in particular then they may have had a case, but they didn’t…’
