Ever been left speechless by a place for all the wrong reasons?

Well, a fleet of disgruntled travelers have taken to TikTok to show some of the spots across the US that didn’t quite live up to expectation.

In a series of ‘expectation vs reality’ comparisons, travelers reveal what they thought their destination would look like compared to video footage and images showing what they found.

One of the biggest complaints around popular national parks such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone appears to be overcrowding, with dozens of tourists ruining photo opportunities.

Meanwhile, one visitor to New York City said the subway rats and trash on the streets did not live up to their glamorous image of the city.

Another location which has been panned by visitors is Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California, with many saying it looks nothing like Instagram shots showing the shoreline glimmering with colored glass pebbles.

Take a trip down to see some of the places across America which critics say you should proceed to with caution.

TikTok creator @valaruuuu uploaded a clip showing what she thought Horseshoe Bend in Arizona would look like compared to what she found. While she envisaged a peaceful view of the natural wonder, she found hordes of people gathered at the crater rim instead

Last summer, TikTok creator @travel.to.find.peace visited Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and watched the Old Faithful geyser erupt. While the ‘expectation’ part of the clip shows a close up of the natural fountain with no-one around, when the camera pulls away, scores of people can be seen sat at a viewing platform with their cameras and phones out

Many travelers, including TikTok creator Paulina Suvorova have complained about Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California, being a letdown. The beach gets its name from the colorful glass pebbles on the shoreline but the traveler said ‘it’s not worth it’ and she ‘wouldn’t recommend to do this trip.’ Footage from her visit shows a grey scene with little glass around

A slew of travelers have complained about the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Traveling duo Brittany and Ethan Benge uploaded an ‘expectation vs reality’ TikTok, with some of their gripes being ‘long lines to get into the park,’ ‘nowhere to park,’ and ‘people and crowds everywhere’

Jake Fox complained that ‘all the best spots are so overcrowded’ as he uploaded clips show what people expect when they visit the Taff Point viewpoint in Yosemite National Park, west of Glacier Point, and what the ‘reality’ looks like. It is a popular spot for wedding photos, and Jake’s TikTok shows scores of newlyweds lining up

While TikTok user Anja van Wyk had visions of the glamor of New York City and the bright lights of Times Square, her ‘reality’ photos reveal her shock at finding rats scurrying around the subway, trash on the sidewalks and cockroaches crawling around

Zion National Park in southwest Utah draws more than five million visitors per year. For this reason, TikTok creator Keila Satirio says that it is crowded even in fall. Despite the crowds of keen hikers, she says that the trip is ‘worth it’ and she has ‘met amazing people in all these hikes’

When she revisited Los Angeles, TikTok creator and travel expert Sia said she was shocked to see ‘the amount of people living in tents and out of their cars.’ She added in the caption to her ‘Instagram vs reality’ TikTok: ‘But what shocked me even more was how those living in LA are so used to this….’

While TikTok creator Jordan Leschinsky ventured to Big Sur in California for the views, she said she picked the wrong time of year and the coastal drive did not live up to expectation with thick fog shrouding the scenery. ‘Big Sur road trip not advised for August,’ she warned viewers

TikTok duo Lisa and Jeremiah said they drove two and a half hours to Bentonite Hills in Utah for sunrise because they had seen ‘the incredible colors all over social media.’ Their Instagram ‘expectation’ shows how the red mountains turn more vibrant shades of red, purple and even blue. However, the couple said they didn’t witness this phenomena and they warned: ‘Don’t get me wrong it was beautiful and the rocks do look different before the sun hits, but I forgot that in social media everything is edited and well, sometimes fake’

While fishing in Alaska sounds like a peaceful activity, TikTok creator Jenn warns that ‘people go where the fish are’ and her ‘reality’ clip of one spot shows the water writhing with keen anglers hunting for salmon. She joked to her followers: ‘I need to find a secret spot’
